Do you keep a record/journal of every book you read?

Anyone else record all their reading? Or maybe you just have better memories than me.

I joined a book club in 2011 and bought a journal to record every book we've read, score it out of 10 and give it a review.

Just skipped through it.

Weirdest novelsl I've ever read: "Hello Kitty Must Die"
"The Hollow Chocolate Bunnies of the Apocalypse" Review just said 'Weirdly mesmerising but WTF was that about?'

Only 3 books scored 10 points :
The Painted Veil - W Somerset Maugham
Lottery - Patricia Wood
Elephant Moon - John Sweeney

Worst and best books anyone?

I keep an Art Journal (started 1/1/17 so many volumes) however I also in it I also keep a Journal and Book List of what I own/ read/ would like to read etc

happystory · 27/07/2022 13:18

I don't write a review but keep an annual list then rate my best and worst of the year ...

Pansypotter123 · 27/07/2022 13:39

I started to keep a handwritten list of books I've been reading in the back of my diary - I'm one of those who prefer a paper diary still. I started this because a couple of years ago I realised I just wasn't reading books at all, not even on holiday! I'd fallen into the trap so many of us have of scrolling (in my case mindlessly!) through my phone when I could otherwise have been reading. I'm reading more frequently now and each year the list is growing but I still need to work at it! Nice thread, by the way! 😀

onemouseplace · 27/07/2022 13:43

I have a spreadsheet! A tab for each year and I like to look back over what I've been reading.

sarge89 · 27/07/2022 13:43

I use GoodReads. I rarely review books but I always rate them and record what I've read. I love the idea of a journal (some beautiful ones on TikTok!) but I don't know if I would have the time to keep it up.

BarryKentPoet · 27/07/2022 13:44

Yes, I log them all on GoodReads

AppleHa · 27/07/2022 13:54

I use Pinterest to keep a record of my reading but don't review.
My old book group has a journal stretching back years, probably decades. We were always a bit pissed when we wrote in it - I'd love to see it again!
Worst book group book ever - Anything For Her by Jack Jordan. My God it was bad.
Best book group books - All the Light We Cannot See, Station11, Morvern Callar, Wise Children, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 27/07/2022 13:57

I used to have a note book where I logged books (alphabetically by authors surname) but some letters got full up while others were empty, and I got bored.

Then I started using goodreads. Then I got bored.

Now I'm back using goodreads. I rare all my books and review occasionally.

Best book I've read recently is "Three Hours" I read it in less than 2 days.

EspeciallyDeIighted · 27/07/2022 13:59

I log them on Goodreads now but I wish I had done it all my life, so many good books. When I spot an old one I know I've read I add it to the list but it would have been better kept in real time.

takeitandleaveit · 27/07/2022 14:01

I think if I belonged to a book club I probably would, but otherwise I wouldn't bother.

dudsville · 27/07/2022 14:02

I just keep the book itself as a remider of books I've really enjoyed and or learned a lot from, etc., I don't keep the others. There are too many that I simply didn't like, so a list would be dull, but every now and then I tap into a rich vein and get a whole lot of new lovely books from it!

WizardHywel · 27/07/2022 14:05

I use Goodreads. Last book I read was Piranesi, absolutely brilliant. I too had got into the habit of doomscrolling, but have had some annual leave from my stressful job and was determined not to spend all of it on my phone.

Solosunrise · 27/07/2022 14:08

I don't, but it's a lovely idea. I recently bought a new novel and part way through realised I'd read it before.
I've been given some lovely notebooks over the years and it would be a great way to use them.

moreteensthansense · 27/07/2022 14:11

Yes I do - mine dates back to 2002. There are some books listed that I have absolutely zero recollection of, but most I can remember a little. I wish I had left a sentence or two to remind myself if I liked them or not!

moreteensthansense · 27/07/2022 14:20

(I do find it useful when I start a book and it feels a bit familiar! I can usually find it on the list somewhere)

terriblyangryattimes · 27/07/2022 14:34

I've been using Goodreads since 2011 and I love it. If for any reason it went subscription only I'd pay for it. I rarely write a full review but I give a star rating and can add books to various digital shelves too (books about war, strong female characters, books I always reccomend etc)

I read mostly on an ereader app on my phone so it's a great way for me to see (digitally at least) what I've read in one place as I don't have the luxury of shelves full of books.

Oh I love spreadsheets but never thought of using one for this. What a great thread

garlictwist · 27/07/2022 16:01

I write them down in a notebook by year with a star next to the ones I've enjoyed. I never really look back on it so not sure why I do it, tbh!

mimbleandlittlemy · 27/07/2022 16:15

Yes, I've done it for about 20 years. I keep them in my diary but nowadays also keep them on Goodreads.

JaninaDuszejko · 27/07/2022 18:13

I keep a book diary and have done since 1994. I just record the date, title and author, no reviews. It's still interesting to look back. In the 90s I read mainly men, now I read mainly women.

prinnycessa · 27/07/2022 18:14

I use goodreads. I put books on my TBR on there and when I'm reading a boom I input it also. Once I finished I update it and give it a score out of 5. It's nice to look back!

SummaLuvin · 27/07/2022 19:26

Goodreads.

I always rate books I finish, but never review. I scan other peoples reviews when I am deciding what to read and that is handy. I also find it useful as I have found a couple of friend/acquaintance who have similar taste to me so I watch out for books they rate 4 & 5 stars.

I use the 'want to read' shelf feature as a way to keep a list of books recommended to me, or I see and look good so I don't forget. Once I have finished all the books I own and haven't read I plan on taking the list to my library and seeing what they have.

I just wish their rating system was out of 10 not 5, sometimes 3 seems generous and 2 seems harsh.

Allmarbleslost · 27/07/2022 19:27

I keep a list. I'm terrible at remembering book titles so the list ensures I don't get the same book twice!

autienotnaughty · 27/07/2022 21:51

I log all books on good reads. I've read 67 books this year so far. The best was It ends with us Colleen Hoover a d the worst was The perfect wife by JP Delaney.

Norugratsatall · 27/07/2022 21:55

Yes I've kept a list of books I've read since 1978. Blush
