It was Death and the Penguin. Kind of odd, to say the least.

Any of you read it?

Yes! A long time ago, really enjoyed it.

I've read several of Kurkov's books and enjoyed them all. Definitely a bit quirky, but I like that.

Yes, I loved this!

FriendlyPineapple · 24/07/2022 11:57

Aww I love this book!

Yes, I read it recently following a recommendation on the 50 bookers thread.
I enjoyed it. It was a wonderfully quirky read.

Yes! A couple of years ago. Loved it. All the more poignant in retrospect.

Read it earlier this year and loved it. Grey Bees is less quirky and about a bee keeper living in the 'grey zone' in the Donbas. Heartbreaking to read now of course.

There are lots of articles about Ukrainian literature around now but beware of the genrification of national literature, a lot of Ukrainian literature available in English is of the quirky black humour variety, Ann Morgan is good on the issues with that.

I guess I'm in the minority. Maybe too "quirky" for me?

The House with the Stained Glass Window by Żanna Słoniowska is not quirky but not sure if it counts as Ukrainian, it's set in Lviv and written by someone who was born there but is Polish. Or The Orphanage by Serhiy Zhadan is suppose to be good but I've not read it so can't comment.
