Is there such a thing?

I'd like to buy a man a book. Is there a book that seems to be particularly popular for men?

Sports biographies? Does he follow any sport? If so, buy a biography about a key figure in that sport.(or a biography from another hobby?).

DH reads approximately 1 book per year, he liked Robert Maxwell's biography that came out last year.

No, of course not, any more than there's any particular type of book favoured by women. My DH wouldn't be in the least interested in any sports related book.

What does the man normally read, if anything? What are his interests?

HoobleDooble · 13/07/2022 21:45

My DH likes to alternate an Autobiography then a novel, usually crime fiction like Simon Kernick. He's recently read Billy Connolly and Bob Mortimer's autobiographies and irritated me by sniggering to himself all the way through. I'm glad he's back onto a nice murder now.

WingBingo · 13/07/2022 21:47

DH reads a lot of fantasy.

he’s got me onto Mistborn.

there are so many genres of books, fiction or non fiction. I guess we would need to know more about him.

The Spy and the Traitor by Ben Macintyre.

FrippEnos · 13/07/2022 22:00

Some more information would be helpful.

But if we are to take a punt anything by Terry Pratchett

CherrySocks · 13/07/2022 22:09

Um.....we're going to need more info.

Do you mean fiction or non-fiction?

What type of books does this particular man enjoy? If you mean non-fiction what are his interests? Does he like history or biography or football or poetry or cinema? If you mean fiction does he like long literary novels or sci fi or crime fiction or short vintage classics?

Or was this a reverse? Has someone asked you to recommend a book for a woman?

Honestly, OP, male readers are not a homogeneous group, any more than women readers are.

Whatdoyawannado · 14/07/2022 22:08

My DH loves the Terry Pratchett Discworld series, I on the other hand can't stand them....

Also the James Bond novels and John Grisham.

aletterfromseneca · 14/07/2022 22:13

Books are a tricky buy unless you know what the person is into reading already.

Otoh, my DH won't even try Discworld whereas I ....

He reads books on philosophy, science, Buddhism. He's more likely to listen to audio books nowadays though. For something light and more mainstream, Bill Bryson.

Oh yes, mine likes Bill Bryson too. RE Terry Pratchett - just goes to show it doesn't matter what gender you are, just different likes and dislikes so you really need more information than 'man' when buying a book for someone else.

^This. Dh and I read largely the same kinds of books (sci fi fantasy, modern and classic fiction in general) plus he reads fairly highbrow historical fiction (which I don't). He wouldn't be remotely interested in biographies (sporty or otherwise) or Bill Bryson. A book really isn't an ideal present unless you know what the recipient likes.

The Jack Reacher books by Lee Child are fab.
Also the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike books by Robert Crais.
