What's your preferred go to / must buy genres? I love a court room drama, but also quite enjoy a big sweeping family saga with lots of characters that I can get really stuck into!

What's your favourite? And any recommendations?

What my mum would call a slice of life. Nothing major has to happen; just usually people and relationships, or just interacting. Quite hard to do well. But when it is...

Autobiography / biography

Always more dramatic than novels IMO

LaTangerina · 08/07/2022 05:33

Have you read the books by Karl Ove Knausgaard? The first one is called a Death in the Family. I read the first two years ago and really enjoyed them, but was trying to describe them and felt like nothing really happened, but it was fascinating!

Murder murder death death.
I'm so bored with my bloody self, this has been going on for years. I'm sure it's addled my mind.
How I long for my teens when it was all Judith Krantz, Maeve Binchy Danielle Steel and a bit of M&B.

Its neck and neck between poetry and British nature writing by women

Springduckling · 10/07/2022 22:09

I do like crime and psychological thrillers, but I like to vary books between that and something more literary or non fiction. I get bored if I read too much of the same author, or the same genre in a row.

Ragged · 10/07/2022 22:45

dunno about 'go-to' but I definitely prefer non-fiction, esp. memoirs

GroggyLegs · 10/07/2022 22:53

Dark post apocalyptic stuff. With zombies for bonus points.

Just finished 'End of the world running club' which I enjoyed.
My favourite is Before and After by Andrew Shanahan.

I try to keep up with my friends recommendations but unless there's the widespread death and destruction I get bored.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 11/07/2022 02:51

@GroggyLegs have u read Mira Grant’s Rise series. So so good zombies!!!

I like books about people doing really challenging travel/ adventures e.g. kayaking across Papua New Guinea, wild hiking long trails, cycling across Europe, walking to the North Pole that sort of thing. I enjoy them most if they're by ordinary people rather than celebrities though.
Also love a bit of historical fiction or a good easy romance beach read.
this is an interesting thread.
