God I'm disappointed!

I thought The Lovely Bones was wonderful. Couldn't wait to read her second but thought it was awful. Cringy infact.

Anyone read it, what d'you think?

really? Dp is reading it at the moment and he's enjoying it. I will read it as soon as he's finished and then let you know!

Thanks. I think I SO liked Lovely Bones that I had really high expectations for Almost Moon.

It wasn't my cup of tea at all - I just didn't get the point of it iykwim.

I really like both of her previous books - would be keen to read this though.

What was up with it?

xx

All her books so far have been horrendous in subject but the first two had a point to them. Lucky was hard to read but it was a factual account of her own experience. I thought it was well written too.

Lovely Bones I found a harrowing read but it left me feeling hugely comforted once I'd finished it.

Almost Moon is about a woman who kills her elderly mother. I think there was huge potential to explore the whole mother/daughter/love/hate thing. It was touched upon but I always felt there was something missing. There were a few lines in the book that I found cringey and a sexual encounter that, imo, was totally unnecessary.

Having said that though, it's different strokes for different folks. I wonder if those who disliked Lovely Bones preferred Almost Moon?

I finished it last night and thought it was absolutely dreadful. I enjoyed the first few pages, where she kills her mother and washes then moves the body, as I thought it showed the total breakdown in her reasoning/emotions quite well.

However, the rest of it just didn't seem to go anywhere. I thought The Lovely Bones was severely marred by that ridiculous sex scene and The Almost Moon had a similarly ridiculous sex scene - so, you've just killed your mother right? Obviosuly the next thing you'd do is go and

SPOILER ALERT **

shag your best friend's son. WHAT!!!!!

An extremely disappointing novel on so many levels, with characters I didn't care about (except the dad), little plot and a totally unsatisfying ending. Rubbish.

I am really struggling to read this, I sooo loved her other two books but this one is dreadful.
Very disappointing.
What was the point of that sex scene? It was so unbelievable (as was the story line really).
Ugh, what a shame.

oh good, not just me then!

I just finished The Almost Moon, and i enjoyed it, so am looking forward to reading the lovely Bones.

It was gruesome, and I did rather feel it was up to the reader to read between the lines, and guess at some of the desperate ways/feelings and ideas the mother had made the daughter feel.

I was just really pleased to have picked up a book that wasn't trashy or pointless.

As I said I haven't read her others, so for me it was fresh and very emotional.

Wonders whether to read this now...I've been looking forward to it after reading Lovely Bones and Lucky.

Hmmm...

Me too - but will it put me off her books for ever?
