Do any of the men in your life read books by women?

My dh has read very few. He has read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell and Piranesi because I loved both so much and he was curious. Can’t think of any others though! He should definitely read more.

squashyhat · 28/05/2022 17:04

My DH has practically Mastermind-level knowledge of all Dorothy L Sayers' novels and has read some Val McDermid but the rest are non-fiction - Lucy Worsley, Sue Black, some local history and archaeology authors. I did strongly recommend Invisible Women but so far with no success...

I probably should add that, on the whole, I do much prefer female writers though. The only exception is Neil Gaiman.

Veryverycalmnow · 28/05/2022 17:32

My husband reads loads of books by women.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 29/05/2022 18:28

It wasn’t till recently that I realised this sort of thing was even thought about. I read a book because it looks interesting and most of the time I don’t even look at who the author is. If their initials are J . W Taylor etc. I don’t go looking up to see if it is a man or a women author.
I was told once I should be reading more books by gay/ black people regardless of what genre they write about. I understand the sentiment behind that. But I’m not spending £15 of my very limited money on a book I will never read. And to be frank if no one in that book is either being killed by a zombie or an axe murderer I’m not really interested.

I never think about the sex of an author. I know my husband has read some of the ones mentioned, don't know if he think about the sex of the author either.

ChessieFL · 29/05/2022 18:32

Don’t think I’ve ever seen DH read a fiction book by a woman. He might have read non fiction (something by Alice Roberts maybe) but almost everything he reads is by a man.

WakeWaterWalk · 29/05/2022 18:33

Yes my son and husband have been in the last few weeks.
Generally they do read a lot of history or historical novels written by men.

onemouseplace · 29/05/2022 18:49

I don't think DH thinks about the sex of the author at all - he's all about genre. He reads a lot of fantasy and is a big fan of people like Robin Hobb, Ursula Le Guin and Anne McCaffrey. He likes Susanna Clarke as well (although I introduced him to her).

Biscuitsareme · 30/05/2022 20:29

My OH reads lots of books by women. Susanna Clarke, Barbara Kingsolver, Daphne du Maurier, Dorothy L Sayers...

JaninaDuszejko · 03/06/2022 20:16

The men I know don't read women. To be fair, the men I know don't read anything like the number of books the women I know read (except my brother and Dad, both of whom read predominantly non-fiction and rarely read women). If you're only reading eight books a year then you're going to be fairly conservative about what you read.

This was published last year and is an interesting read on literary fiction written by men and women.

Springduckling · 04/06/2022 10:30

DH reads books by SG MacLean (she writes the Seeker books) and has a Val McDermid waiting to be read.
Otherwise no, he just reads male authors.
I probably read more female than male on average.

Springduckling · 04/06/2022 10:33

Oh and he read the Harry Potter books as they came out.

TonTonMacoute · 04/06/2022 18:09

When we met DH did not read books by women, now he reads lots of them (proud).

Not sure I would agree with some of the books on that list in the OP - The God of Small Things is not the perfect novel!
