Should I keep my Terry Pratchett books for dc?

I have all of the Discworlds up to Thief of Time.

I met TP just after Thief of Time was published, he was obviously a fabulous writer but also quite a marmite chap and unfortunately I haven't been able to read his books since.

I remember loving them as a teenager, and have been keeping them for my own dc. Now 3 and 1, so playing the long game!

As they are taking up a great deal of room and I'm trying to declutter a little, I wondered if anyone else's dc have enjoyed them recently? Is it worth giving them houseroom? Have they dated well or badly? I can't judge myself because I can't get more than a few pages in without getting cross.

If I did declutter I would still keep a handful of the more classic ones . . .

I haven't read the books myself, but he/they are generally well loved. Are they signed, limited edition anything like that? Might they be worth something down the line? Do you have room to store them?

I regretted having got rid of my HP books because some would have been worth money and my DC are into them now. I think if I had STP books I might feel the same way down the line. But equally I know I had to do that I wasn't able to store them. So it does depend really

I would keep them if you can find the space.

if not, and they are the Paul kirby original covers there is quite a good demand on eBay etc for them (I’m still missing a few myself)!

by the time your dc are old enough, I suspect you could download the e-books cheaply enough so they could still enjoy them.

They have aged really well, but if your kids are 1 and 3 and you need the space, I would donate them- I say this as a huge Terry Pratchett fan who can't imagine getting rid of any of his books. Realistically it'll be at least a decade before either of them read them, and you could always just keep a couple of your favourites and rebuy the others when the time comes. You could then use the space for things that you really love. If you have an attic, maybe put them in there if you are still unsure about getting rid of them? Some of the older paperbacks with the original covers are getting to be collectables.
As an aside, I am really curious as to what he could have said that put you off the whole series so wholeheartedly!

Dd has worked her way through the witches and the guards sets, but I think she was about 12/13 so you’d be hanging onto them for a while.
her favourite is funnily enough is good omens (with Neil gaiman), she’s read it a dozen times.
I don’t think they’ed ever be hard to replace if your kids did show an interest. They may not like them at all ds read mort and wasn’t fussed (I was much offended 😂)

DS - now nearly 17 - loves them. Especially the books with the witches, Tiffany Aching, The Watch etc.

I’m not sure I want to know what he said, I’m happy in my little bubble!

DuneFan · 25/05/2022 10:17

Ah thank you all!

Well I think I will look to see if I have any particularly valuable ones, though they're mainly very well read paperbacks, and keep the rest. Sounds like it's likely to be worthwhile keeping them, especially as I've already had them unread for about 20 years, what's another 10?

Terry Pratchett reminded me too much of an ex boyfriend who was objectively pretty awful and every time I pick up his books I am transported back to my teenage self!

Glad we have helped you decide.

I am sorry that TP reminded you of someone awful, it’s so sad when people we once admired are tainted, a sense of disappointment in some way Flowers
