Something I can immerse myself in. I like historical fiction (Wolf Hall and BUTB, The Crimson Petal and the White, All the Light We Cannot See) but open to anything big and brilliant and immersive.

Oh I also love The Cazalet Chronicles which were recommended on here, and really enjoyed I Claudius despite thinking it would be dry (it wasn't dry.)

Any recommendations please?

The Goldfinch. Really long and you just get caught up in their world. A Prayer for Owen Meany is also good.

I loved cloud atlas, also a little life

Copperas · 27/04/2022 19:57

Dorothy Dunnett’S Lymond series fits the bill exactly!

AuntieStella · 27/04/2022 20:00

I don't know how long counts has long!

How about Vanity Fair by William M Thackeray

Or if you want a challenge, try Proust. I've never managed to get in to it, but apparently its really rewarding if you do

Once upon a river by Dianne Setterfield, long and immersive, magical folklore. Lots of characters, families and layered stories, e.g. thriller, mystery, romance, whodunnit etc.

Ruthietuthie · 27/04/2022 20:02

Orhan Pamuk's "The Museum of Innocence" is brilliant.

Glowinglights · 27/04/2022 20:02

I really loved ‘No Country’ by Kalyan Ray - enjoyed ‘Labyrinth’ by Kate Moss - loved ‘Zuleikha’ (forgot author ☺️).

A Fine Balance by Rohin Mistry. Takes a little getting into but becomes absolutely engrossing.

ModerationInEverything · 27/04/2022 20:03

Obviously the Shardlake series or Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell, slow to start but fantastic.

Sauvignonblanket · 27/04/2022 20:03

I loved A Suitable Boy.

HighInPolyunsaturates · 27/04/2022 20:04

Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet.

The Cicero Trilogy by Robert Harris.

Both long, immersive, historical and in my view, brilliant.

Mungojerry69 · 27/04/2022 20:04

I loved stephen Kings 11.22.63

BeautifulWar · 27/04/2022 20:04

Alias Grace or The Blind Assassin?

Juliantheloaf · 27/04/2022 20:05

Katherine by Anya Seton is really good and I think fits your criteria.

A lot of people will turn up their noses, but I spent a very illuminating week getting through Atlas Shrugged. I loved it.

theotherfossilsister · 27/04/2022 20:06

Ah these all sound amazing. I love Cloud Atlas @MissHavershamReturns , one of my favourites along with The Bone Clocks and Black Swan Green. I'm a bit scared of A Little Life as I've been told it's devastating.

Once Upon a River sounds gorgeous @applecatchers36

theotherfossilsister · 27/04/2022 20:07

The Secret History by Donna Tartt. There’s another one on the top of my tongue - I think it’s called Pilgrim 🤔

Taranta · 27/04/2022 20:07

The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver

Absolutesuperstar · 27/04/2022 20:07

I knew someone would have already recommended The Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follet. Also the prequel, The Evening and the Morning which is just as good (if not better). His New Century trilogy is brilliant. I’m a big Ken Follet fan. Each book is 1000+ pages. Epic in a word.
