I finished The Wheel of Time series and I have the worst book hangover ever.

Started the audio books at the end of November and I finished A Memory of Light a couple of days ago.
I miss them.

It wasn’t plain sailing all the way. I swear there was a moment during the slog where a bunch of Aes Sedai and the Kin took a whole frigging chapter to walk across a courtyard and I nearly gave up.

But I miss it now it’s ended. Moping about with nothing to listen to, wanting to go back to Randland.

I hear you! It took me a year to read them (before kids and wifi existed) and I did the audiobook listen a couple of years ago. I might start them again soon Grin

RingBinderInjury · 22/04/2022 21:20

I’m a tiny bit tempted to start again just so I can pay better attention to Verin my favourite characters and plot lines.

I love the WoT books. I’m halfway through re-reading them for the third time (I know, a bit much!!). It does mean I can skip all the bits I find boring now though without losing the plot! Although with an 8month old, it’s taking much longer than usual to read them 😂 I’m not much of an audio book person but maybe that’s what I need to try instead! When did you normally listen to them if you don’t mind me asking?

Have you seen the Amazon WoT series?

RingBinderInjury · 22/04/2022 22:17

I did see the tv series which in turn gave me the urge to try reading the books again. I tried reading them in the early 2000s and got up to book 5 I think before all the skirt smoothing and under-breast arm folding made me give up. So glad I persisted this time. What a pay off that last book was.

I listen to audio books all the time. I drive a lot in my job so that eats up hours. Walking the dog, running, doing non-noisy housework and I usually listen for half an hour when I get into bed.

I was quite ill with Covid so that was at least 3 books I think spent languishing in bed listening to them.

The audiobooks are fantastic. Husband and wife team reading the male and female pov chapters respectively.

I recently reread them but I just couldn’t finish the Sanderson ones. His writing is so far removed from Jordan’s that it kept throwing me out of the story. In one bit he puts ““what?” Gawyn thought in shock””. That’s like YA fiction levels of writing. It’s a shame I know the ending as long ago I read the last book but there were lots of loose ends to be tied up - Sanderson just wasn’t up to the job!

if you haven’t read Robin Hobb yet and want another sweeping fantasy give hers a go. First one is assassin’s apprentice and it’s fantastic

GertrudeKerfuffle · 23/04/2022 22:01

I second Robin Hobb. There's loads of them too if you like them, but you will suffer another major hangover at the end Grin

Believeitornot · 23/04/2022 22:04

Yes to Robin Hobb

I’ve read the WOT series about 10 times (except the last few books as they’re much newer).

every time I’ve finished the last one I’ve felt a sense of loss.

there is a prequel - you could read that?

the Robin Hobb series is amazing and I read the final trilogy a few years ago after not realising there was one and it was awesome ❤️

RingBinderInjury · 24/04/2022 18:35

I have read all the Robin Hobb books twice now. Loved them. My favourite fantasy writer by a long shot.
I haven’t read the WOT prequel yet. Keeping it saved for a future date when I’m in dire need to go back for a bit of Randland.
Am thinking about stating the Brandon Sanderson Stormlight Archive series but need to do some book palate cleaning first with some non-fantasy first.

Haven’t read the wheel of time series but wanted to say I completely sympathise with the post-audiobook-series hangover thing. I listen in a similar way to you I think - as much as possible, when I can while pottering about, certainly while driving and before sleep. And I tend to listen to whole series - so when I finish a huge run of books and don’t know what to go on to next, I’m all grumpy and anxious and displaced till I get it sorted! And have to do a lot of reading of articles and blogs etc to delay the loss of the book world.

There are a load of newly recorded Terry pratchetts if you just needed something fun for a break?
