Help me remember the series and author...

I had a flash of memory earlier about some books but I can't remember who they were written by.

A young man goes to work at a magical wizard department store. There's a love interest I think, some political wizard stuff. Magical dimensions and a sword fight on a beach.

Any ideas? I'm sure it was a trilogy, probably written late 80's or 90's

Maybe something to do with him having a magical uncle as well

It's not Tom Holt is it?

SpottyBumPony · 13/04/2022 08:55

@PastMyBestBeforeDate Yes! That's him, wahoo. It's the J W Wells & Co novel's

Sounds fun - but there was an excerpt from the first book (re the Kindle version) which had 'drawer' spelt as 'draw' - which was a bit off-putting!

BIWI · 13/04/2022 09:02

... which is a very pedantic response. Sorry! Blush

Nnique · 13/04/2022 09:18

Oh my word @BIWI I couldn’t get over that!!

But I’m glad you found your answer OP!

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 13/04/2022 09:28

I'm so excited to have been the solver! That's never happened before :)
I will check my paper copy of The Portable Door later but that sort of thing would have annoyed me BIWI

Here it is - sounds like it must be from somewhere near the beginning:

First things first, here’s your employment contract.’ He pushed across two bundles of typescript, certainly no thicker than the Bible or the omnibus edition of The Lord of the Rings. ‘If you want to sit there the rest of the morning wade through it all, fine’ he said. ‘Or you could just sign both copies on the back page where I’ve marked your initials in pencil, and save us both a lot of time.’

Paul signed (his pen had run out; Mr Tanner passed him another without saying a word) and handed back the bundles. Mr Tanner signed, shoved one copy back to him and dropped the other into a deep draw, which he then locked. ‘That’s that out of the way, then,’ he said. ‘Next. I expect you’d like to know what you’re actually going to be doing.’

Well I'm relieved to report that my paper copy passes the pedant test! Page 21

Good to hear! Grin

That sounds fun, will give it a try! You might enjoy the Enchantment Emporium - a young woman inherits a very strange shop from her grandmother and slowly comes to realise the important role it plays in the magical life of the city. Very funny and with some seriously scary aunties.

BIWI · 13/04/2022 18:27

Sounds like it's in the same vein as Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London series here

SpottyBumPony · 13/04/2022 20:12

Hehe I'm so glad the printed copy passed the test. I'll lookout for the others too
