I'm really interested in some recommendations of feminist books or fiction that has strong female protagonists. Thanks!

@SteakExpectations love your username, and love Sabriel!

The Wolf Den
Pretending
Travelers' Tales: A Woman's World

If you like fantasy/speculative fiction then I
highly recommend "The Once and Future
Witches" by Alix E Harrow. Fabulous
reimagining of the suffragette movement in
America linking back also to the Salem
witch trials. The main protagonists are
three sisters with different outlooks,
characters and destinies. Fabulous read!

@PersonIrresponsible I've jumped on the book bandwagon and also got your book (excellent reviews on Amazon I see), looking forward to it arriving.

To add to the list of recommendations - I'll say "Woman on the Edge of Time" - Marge Piercy. Really interesting and I loved the alternate view of the world.

Another author with excellent abilities and strong female protagonists is Elizabeth Arthur - I've enjoyed several of her books, but most of all "Antarctic Navigation".

@Whatdoyawannado

A while ago I asked a similar question in another section of MN and got a lot of great recommendations. Don't know what the etiquette is of referring to your own thread but I've read so many wonderful books thanks to these posters I thought it would be a shame not to share. Also some I have given as gifts and they've gone down well.

Also recently I have enjoyed
-The White Woman on The Green Bicycle by Monique Roffey.
-The Unlikely Event by Judy Blume (fairly easy read)
-Devotion by Hannah Kent, although I probably enjoyed her other 2 more. There's a big twist in Devotion that I didn't see coming and it really threw me. But that's not the author's fault - I'm just rather pedestrian!

I love uprooted by naomi novik, it's a fantasy book based on Eastern European folk tales.

I also love Just One Damned Thing After Another by Jodi Taylor. It's a series about a time travelling historian.

I'm late to this but how about Girl, Woman, Other (Bernadine Evaristo)?

Beachmumma · 12/06/2022 15:22

Nancy E Turner is my favourite novelist. She has written so many great books but my favourite ever (These is my words) I've read probably 10 times over. It's the 1st of a trio of novels ( also fantastic reads) about Sarah Agnes Prine, the heroine. Set in wild West late 1880s to early 1900s. Can't recommend it highly enough if you like emotional rollercoaster reads X

Unless by Carol Shield.
In fact anything by Carol Shield or Helen Dunmore.

Deathraystare · 31/07/2022 11:47

@PersonIrresponsible

Loving it. Despite my 'name' I am an old softy - though a lot of my reading matter and viewing matter is quite dark. You are certainly braver than I am. I doubt I would ever camp alone! I keep worrying for you!

PersonIrresponsible · 31/07/2022 21:40

@Deathraystare Why, thank you! I won't ruin the ending for you but I don't die. 😝

Read them a loooong time ago but really enjoyed Joan Smith's Loretta Lawsons books at the time: A Masculine Ending and Don't Leave Me This Way although can't see them on Amazon. They were adapted for tv in 1992 with Janet McTeer and Imelda Staunton and were well cast.

felulageller · 03/08/2022 14:42

Persepolis, the graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi (sp?)

Out of Africa
The women's room

Miriam Margoles autobiography is jaw dropping

Margaret Atwood

Ursula le Guin

Alice Walker

Toni Morrison

Faye Weldon for something lighter

ilovesushi · 08/08/2022 12:58

I would recommend any of Richmal Compton's books for adults - Narcissa, Caroline and Leadon Hill are particularly good. Very interesting female characters and dynamics, some of them very toxic.

beguilingeyes · 12/08/2022 13:03

I came here to say Marge Piercy. Her books are amazing,

XYZnn · 16/08/2022 09:48

Lots to offer here but the last one I read last week was Yviebeth Bardug who is a new author. The lead is a strong female who has had various challenges in life. Also try Nora Roberts, a very established author, she has hundreds of books most with female leads.

Interesting women doing things that are usually forbidden because of their sex? How To Climb Mont Blanc In A Skirt. Utterly fantastic
