Hoping someone can help me. I read a lot on my kindle, maybe 2 books a week. I fancy trying an audio book, but can I try one on Amazon free?. I pay for Kindle Unlimited and amazon prime, not sure if I'm getting value from them. Do you think it is worth it?

Are you a member of your local library? You can then borrow audio books for free. You'll need to download (onto your phone or tablet) whichever app your library uses and enter your library membership number and pin. BorrowBox and Libby are 2 of the apps.

Your Amazon account details work for Audible too. So you can just log in at Audible.co.uk . I think they are still offering a free book to begin with. You can also buy Audible books via Amazon website, but I find Audible website a bit easier. TListening to audio books takes a bit of getting used to compared to reading, but is such a pleasure. Especially curled up in bed. Not having to hold a book, or even have your eyes open is great. Or try Librivox which is totally free. There are also lots of free audiobooks on Youtube and Spotify.

Thanks for the replies, I'll try a free one on audible if I can. I don't really want to do another subscription.

Audible is a subscription. So if you don’t want that, and want to listen to audiobooks regularly, go to your library and check out the options.

My library audiobook app is Borrowbox, other libraries use Libby. If you are signed up to the library (free) then listening is free.

LittleDiaries · 10/03/2022 07:46

Seconding library apps. Borrowbox is really good. It's almost making my subscription to Audible redundant. It's just the waiting times for reservations that can get a bit frustrating for a new book.

You can, without an Audible subscription, upgrade a kindle book with the audiobook, and they're often a lot cheaper done that way than if you go straight for the audiobook.

Type in Amazon

Free audio books with prime

There’s a lot of choice for a free trial

Imtoooldforallthis · 10/03/2022 08:36

I've joined my local library so will try that first. All amazon free audible books require a trial membership which I really don't want to do.

What are the last 3 books you really enjoyed?

heysally · 10/03/2022 12:57

I agree, love my local library. It saves me a fortune.

heysally · 10/03/2022 12:58

App I meant

Imtoooldforallthis · 10/03/2022 13:53

Does it take some getting used to, I've downloaded the Thursday murder club, listened to about an hour, but can't say I really enjoyed it and then I fell asleep!!!!!

OP posts:
LittleDiaries · 10/03/2022 17:03

I find the secret with listening to audiobooks is not to sit down and do nothing, otherwise I fall asleep too Grin which isn't difficult as I have CFS. I listen as I do other things, cooking, cleaning, walking, car journeys or crafting. Anything that still allows me to give my full attention to the audiobook. And it did take me a while to train myself not to drift away from listening. I never listen when I'm really tired either.

Imtoooldforallthis · 11/03/2022 20:36

Maybe it's not for me then, I like to read in bed or relaxing on holiday. If I'm pottering around I prefer to have the radio on.

Phormiumjester · 12/03/2022 15:56

I listen while I'm cooking, cleaning, putting away laundry. Through Alexa. I absolutely love listening to stories!

NoSquirrels · 12/03/2022 15:58

@Imtoooldforallthis

It’s just another way to listen/read, rather than a replacement for reading a book. For instance I listen to audiobooks when driving, when walking the dog, when cooking or doing chores. I read books or ebooks in bed, in the bath, on a train etc. I don’t use audiobooks instead of physical books, I use them as well as.

It’s partly a habit forming thing too, so at the moment you listen to the radio when pottering but you could listen to an audiobook instead - why not?

BigFatLiar · 12/03/2022 16:00

You could try some of the bbc stuff. They have catchup for radio drama and some podcasts.

OldTinHat · 12/03/2022 16:01

Also advocating the library apps! Free and fab. I use Borrowbox, my mum uses Libby (different councils!).

Imtoooldforallthis · 17/03/2022 11:05

Further to my post I don't think audio books are for me. But as I joined my local library I'm thinkng it might be worth me borriwing some ebooks. I normally use a kindle paperweight so what ereaders can anyone recommend that are similar. Would need to be compatible with borrow box.

OP posts:
ChessieFL · 17/03/2022 16:45

I don’t think any of the kindles are compatible with library apps. Therefore you will need a different device to read library ebooks on. This could be a different type of e-reader (e.g. kobo) or just download the library app onto a phone/tablet and read on there.

I think you can use software called calibre to convert library ebooks to kindle format but I’ve never done it.
