How do I read audio books? Please help an aged technophobe

So I have an iPhone (without very much memory but I could delete something) and an Amazon account.

Is this what I need? Or an app? Or an account somewhere else?

Free would be ideal, but not essential. Could someone explain in simple terms what I need to do please?

I use Audible. Can use it on my phone or computer.

RamblingFar · 06/03/2022 21:39

Sorry, split over two posts. I pay for Audible, it's an app.

I also use the Libby app from my library on my phone. It is free. However, the book choices are extremely limited.

I borrow audiobooks from my local library. I listen through headphones on my phone when I walk the dog. I can renew then return when I’ve finished them.

I use Audible too - £7.99 a month which is one free book, but there is then a lot of free content as well. The app for it is great, and so easy to use as you buy things and then they are available in your library

I use my local library app, I got a free library membership and a pin number from them, downloaded the free app and then borrowed audiobooks on there. Yes, it will take some memory but you're only borrowing the books so hopefully not a lot.

Cocopogo · 06/03/2022 21:45

I use my local library app. If you go to the library and ask them they should get you set up. That way it’s free

Thank you so much.. speedy, helpful answers. Very grateful x

I use audible, which you do get one credit per month for £7.99 but also loads of free audio books, podcasts, etc. Then on top of that they have member sales I have got books for 50p/£1 and they often do £3 sales. They also sometimes do BOGOF so instead of 1 book for £7.99 you get two. I listen whilst I do the housework and it helps motivate me and I learn a lot at the same time

There's also scribd which is an app. Like a library you have access to a large range of books but there's no time limit to how long you have them. Unless you download the audiobook you'd be streaming it so shouldn't tax your memory too much.

Borrowbox is great if your library is a member

I agree, it is great and lots of choice - love it.

My library has physical audiobooks to borrow, it's a little device that has one book loaded onto it, you provide your own headphones and battery. They are free to borrow but I don't know what range of titles they have.

chickensafari · 07/03/2022 11:46

I use BorrowBox too, I find a lot of the books I want to listen to are on loan, but I can request them and am given a date on which they are available to me. Its not perfect but it is free, and I can usually find something interesting to listen to and don't mind waiting when more popular books are on loan.

Clymene · 07/03/2022 11:50

I get books via my library. It's free!

Clymene · 07/03/2022 11:54

If you go into your library, I'm sure they will help you get set up. My library uses the Libby app which you can download to your phone.
