Dp bought it me to read in hospital, not quite sure if he was trying to be funny by buying me a book to read in a psychiatric ward about Freud and a serial killer.

I am enjoying but have never heard of it or the author, dp said the guy in waterstones recommended it.

Yep - I have read it. Quite enjoyed it although the ending is quite odd if I remember rightly.

am only a few chapters in.

I loved it, found it a fascinating topic and a really unusual plot with lots of unexpected twists. DH hated it and only read the 1st chapter.

I studies psychology and am a huge freud fan which has added to my enjoyment so far.

How much is based on fact and how much fiction?

That is a question that I would like the answer to twinset. I remember reading the introduction about how they attended those meetings/conferences at that time, but I would speculate that the majority of it is fiction. I really loved it, was one of those books I was sad to finish.

I enjoyed this book once i got into it, quite gripping with complex plot twists- especially the end! Liked the under the river bit, but couldn't visualise the structure very well. Worst bit- the horse, I'll say no more!

I finished it as I could not sleep last night.

The ending was odd.

I also hated the horse bit, I read that bit whilst grimacing.

suwoo there is a chapter at the end where the author states what is fact or bades on fact.

I also couldn't picture the structure, even though I kept re reading the descriptions.

It has given me a fascination about New York at the turn of the century. Am now hunting out biographies of the Astors and Vanderbilts.

I hated it. This book ruined Jung for me. Now when I think of him, he is forever tainted by his depiction as a pervy sadist who makes Freud wee himself.

If you like this sort of thing, Caleb Carr's The Alienist is far, far better witten.

twinsetandpearls · 02/01/2008 17:16

he does not claim it to be a balanced portrait of jung.

Jung did claim that Freud wet himself in front of him but he may have made that up to discredit freud.

I will look it up.

The horse? Have I blanked the horse out of my mind it was so horrible?

I swear I shouldn't ever need to buy another book - after a couple of months I can never remember what happens. I shoudl just re-read what I have!
