What did you enjoy after it? I had a run of really great books culminating with A Gentleman In Moscow which I loved SO much. I now can't find anything to live up to it and haven't finished a book for a while. What did you love after this??!

The first thing that popped into my head was All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr.

Its historical fiction and although it's completely different, I loved it and felt so emotional at the end.

His follow Lincoln Highway was fabulous, took longer to get into but then was quite fast paced. And funnily enough I just read Cloud Cuckoo Land which was Doerr's follow up, very epic, lots of interwoven stories but again once into it very much enjoyed it.

Oooh @yoshiblue I came on to recommend All The Light You Cannot See too. A similar sort of epic history based thing.

Also Hamnet, if you’ve not read it.

I've just finished and posted all over this section of MN today about this.

Madonna in a Fur Coat, Sabahattin Ali - incredible

And, I don't recommend A Gentleman in Moscow to people because I cannot deal with people not liking it. That is how strongly I feel.

Little by Edward Carey. It has the same sort of transportation effect and slow attention to detail. My copy has amazing illustrations in too, which are completely in keeping with the story.

Little is an orphan in Revolutionary Paris, and the story is her life. As an adult, she becomes known as Madame Tussaud.

All the Light We Cannot See - loved that book so much.

Following this thread with great interest.

Loved All the Light They Cannot See too so will look into Cloud Cuckoo Land.

Love the sound of Little too.

Just finished Lincoln Highway, fantastic read. Not quite in the same league as AGIM in my opinion but still very very good.

Just thought of another couple - Burial Rites by Hannah Kent and Hanna’s Daughters by Marianne Fredriksson. Both books very much with women as the central characters.

What about Helen Dunmore? The Betrayal is set in Russia and is excellent. Its a sequel to The Siege but I read it as a stand alone.

highlandcoo · 15/02/2022 21:27

How about Bel Canto by Ann Patchett - a siege in a South American country and the interesting relationships that develop between the idealistic young hostage-takers and those held captive. Much more subtle and nuanced than it sounds.

or The Shipping News by Annie Proulx? A big shambling journalist tries to make a new life in a run-down old family house in Newfoundland with his two young daughters and his aunt. LIfe in a remote community on the edge of the ocean is wonderfully evoked.

Both are excellent imo.

Another couple - Once Upon a River and Tge Midnight Circus

Haus1234 · 15/02/2022 22:04

Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead?

YingMei · 15/02/2022 22:25

Thank you for all of these. I've read Once Upon A River which I enjoyed , and I absolutely loved Hamnet.
Some great ideas here, thank you!
