Unexpected sequels/ prequels

I recently discovered Charlotte Sometimes, which I read and loved as a child, is one of three books featuring Charlotte. They seem quite supernatural from the blurb which surprised me because despite the time travelling element I didn’t feel Charlotte lived in a magical world.
I’m really looking forward to tracking them down as I’ve always been a bit of a completist - I read all the Anne books, all the Famous Fives, all the Katy books, even belatedly the ones about Clover, and the Wild West one, all the Heidi books even though they are by a different author - Chalet School did defeat me though.
Anyone else been surprised by sequels? I actually have recurring dreams where I am in a library or second hand book shop and find a section which has sequels to much loved books!

The prequel to Jane Eyre is by Jean Rhys and called The Wide Sargasso Sea and tells Bertha's story..and I love and recommend it.

I loved The Wide Sargasso Sea @NotInMyFrontGardenYouDont. It was televised a few years ago.

Oh I had no idea either. I reread this on kindle last year, not having read it since I was say 11 or 12, having googled "book about a girl who time travels with a magical bedpost" as I couldn't recall the title at all.
Good old Google

@RampantIvy oooh I'll have to Google that! Thanks Smile

They are Emma in Winter, which I think is what Charlotte’s sister is getting up to while she is busy time travelling, and The Summer Birds which is Charlotte and Emma before Charlotte goes to boarding school.

There is another book I really liked called Camerons at the Castle, which I knew had prequels but didn’t realise had sequels because they hadn’t been written when the copy I had was published. I really want to find out what happened to sexy Somerled the Scottish laird.

It also took me ages to find out that Wolves of Willoughby Chase has sequels after The Stolen Lake, because they hadn’t been written at the time I was reading them!

Thanks BasiliskFace

Wow they’re expensive second hand!!

EBearhug · 10/02/2022 18:08

Emma in Winter and the Summer Birds are hideously expensive second hand (and prequels rather than sequels.) I did enjoy them, but I'd say there's a reason everyone is aware of Charlotte sometimes as a classic, and these two less so. They are more supernatural and not quite as satisfying as Charlotte Sometimes.

I did suspect that might be the case (not as good) although I still want to read them - don't know how though given the prices!

It was the same with the Katy books - there was also a reason the only ones still in print were What Katy Did, Did at School, and Did Next - but it was still fun to see Clover and Elsie again.

All the Wizard of Oz sequels - there's 14 books in total. I remember particularly liking the second one as a child (about a boy called Tip)

Not so much that they're little known but Charlie & the Great Glass Elevator (sequel to Chocolate Factory) and The Starlight Barking (sequel to 101 Dalmatians) are both pleasingly bonkers.

BasiliskFace · 11/02/2022 11:44

Oh yes, I preferred Starlight Barking to 101 Dalmatians, although it is a very different book!
I remember reading a few of the Oz books from the library - the main one I remember was where a character (a chicken?! or maybe Dorothy? Or the boy you mentioned?) had to choose which of rooms full of ornaments were actually people in disguise.
I was also a fan of the sequels to Carbonel: The King of the Cats.

Marianne Dreams which I loved as a child has a sequel, Marianne and Mark, which I picked up years later and didn't realise was about the same Marianne and Mark until a good way into it. It's a older Young Adult book I would say, just checked and theres a copy of it on eBay for £125 so I really should find my copy!
