A book about discussing books?

I was in a bookshop yesterday and I was having difficulty finding another book to get the 'buy one get one half price' deal. A shop assistant starting asking me questions about my preferences, favourite authors etc. I explained that I have difficulty answering questions on the spot (I am on the autism spectrum). We got there in the end (My Brilliant Friend), but it got me thinking - is there a book anyone can suggest about literature and ways to discuss/think about them?

I'm not a member of a book club as I'm such a slow reader, but I'd like a resource to encourage me to think more critically about what I'm reading. Any suggestions please?

There are online suggestions for book club discussions and if it's a classic book or studied in curriculum there are online study guides which might be useful.

Maybe try Goodreads or Storygraph as places you can refine your likes/dislikes etc and see what sort of recommendations come up. Or just have a good browse in your local library and see what takes your fancy there. Fwiw I'd hate to be put on the spot in a bookshop by someone asking me what I'm looking for Smile

Thank you. Those are some really useful suggestions. I'll give those a try.

I've also come across this book that looks like the kind of guide I had in mind: www.amazon.co.uk/How-Read-Book-Intelligent-Touchstone/dp/0671212095/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=3445O4A2BMVIY&keywords=how+to+read+a+book&sprefix=how+to+rea%2Caps%2C128&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1643457462&sr=8-1

It's a few years old now, but I've been enjoying David Lodge, The Art of Fiction. A collection of short pieces on all kinds of themes using passages from many 'ages' of good writing, like reading an expert's take on a comprehension.

Did you ask the shop assistant for help? It should be ok in a bookshop or library to say thanks for their help but you'd like a few minutes to look if that's what you would prefer. I really prefer to decide when I want to ask for help.
