Non fantasy books for an 8 year old girl

When I was my daughter's age I was just starting to enjoy books like Sweet Valley Twins and The Babysitter's Club.

From books we've read together so far I think she'd enjoy something similar, by that I mean books about kids just going to school etc, no dragons, magic, unicorns.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Particularly if it's a series, I'd love to get her hooked on a series!

Tracey beaker?

Mine loved the worst witch at that age but I'm guessing that comes under fantasy (she goes to school). There's the dick king smith series set on farms and another farm based series they enjoyed too, about a brother and sister living in the lakes

Dork Diaries are pretty good for that age. I think DD had the series for her 9th birthday.

Emma Carroll - Frost Hollow Hall, The girl who walked on air and others

Iva Ibbotson Journey to the River Sea, Dragonfly Pool

I don’t know about a series but the new jk rowling Christmas pig book is ace. We love it here. Dd is also 8

Oh sorry you wanted no magic

The Clarice Bean books by Lauren Child?

MrsGaskthrill · 06/01/2022 22:14

We enjoyed Sleepovers by Jaqueline Wilson recently

My 6yo is reading ivy and bean but it may be a bit young?

A blast from the past but Enid blyton naughtiest girl in the school series has been a huge hit with my 8 year old (I read the first few to her and 6yo DD and she has read the others herself - there were 10 in the box set we got).

Sparklespangle · 06/01/2022 22:14

Swallows and amazons

AcceptYourself · 06/01/2022 22:15

I loved Jacqueline Wilson books probably around that age!

iwanttobeonleave · 06/01/2022 22:39

'The boy that biked the world' is brilliant!

FrecklesMalone · 06/01/2022 22:43

My DD at 8 loved Tom Gates, Treetop family, David Baddiel, Jaqueline Wilson, first Harry Potters.

My daughter, nearly 9 has loved Mallory Towers, I really enjoyed rereading it and sharing my memories of it with her too. The new ones are just as good as the original ones too.

The Clementine series by Sara Pennypacker - ordinary girl. Set in Boston. Funny and very readable. My son loves the Tom Gates ones mentioned above.

Drywhitefruitycidergin · 06/01/2022 22:55

My 7 year old is currently enjoying Tom Gates, Judy Moody & The Treehouse stories. She adored the "younger" Judy Blume's as well. The Pain and the great One and the Superfudge series.

Wimpy Kid
Daisy and the Trouble with…(insert myriad titles here)

I would second that. We're half way through it and loving it. My 8yo DS dislikes fantasy but loves this. It's more about toys coming alive and a boy trying to rescue his lost toy rather than witches/wizards fantasy. If she has a beloved cuddly toy, she'll really relate to it.

All the Enid Blyton books. DD1 love the Famous Five and the Adventure series at that age.

What about some real life stories the Little House books by Laura Ingells Wilder? The stories get more grown up as Laura gets older but the first three (LH in the Big Woods, LH on the Prairie and By the Banks of Plum Creek) she should find interesting. When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit is also a good option at that age. They are all a more challenging read than Enid Blyton so might be a bedtime story rather than a read alone depending on her reading ability but completely age appropriate.

The Wells & Wong series by Robin Stevens.

TheSpiral · 08/01/2022 22:16

Clarice Bean - the chapter books not the picture books

HelloDulling · 08/01/2022 22:18

@StrychnineInTheSandwiches

The Wells & Wong series by Robin Stevens.
These. Like Agatha Christie for girls, set in a girls boarding school.
Notoironing · 08/01/2022 22:36

Try the City Farm series.

2319inprogress · 08/01/2022 22:38

The Penderwicks brilliant story of a family - but leave the last book until older.
