Read this when I was about 18, just started it again and am hooked already. Anyone else read it, what do you think?

Oh, it's just so amazing, I'm making my book club read it and having been foced to read trashy shit it is a relief to read The Magus again, it's just superb, it really is. Love that you love it to Beets.
Will check out that meetup now, thanks, xx

Tickle, yes and he also wrote the Collector which is brilliant as well.

I read The Magus over 10 years ago - very little I've read since has come close, it's an excellent book. I also went to the trouble of trying to find out what the last few lines translated into, but can't remember what they are off the top of my head! I don't often re-read books, but have started to wonder whether I've left it long enough to go back to The Magus; I would so hate not to be as bowled over as before, so almost want to leave it at the one read - I always say it's my favourite book - like a surreal painting in book form.

I have also read The Collector too - very, very good JF is a fantastic author imho.

This was one of my faves too, read it on a greek island in 1990! However, I recently re-read it and had to agree with JF (as he wrote in the introduction) that it is a young person's book, I found it a bit silly and convoluted the second time round. Sad really as I loved it sooooo much. I have therefore blanked the second reading from my mind

Yes, you make a good point CD. Re-reading loved books could be like trying to re-live a brilliant holiday - some things best left where they are etc.

God though, so impressed you actually read it whilst on a Greek island (I must've read it around 1990 too, when I actually fitted the description of 'young person'!)

I loved the Magus too, introduced to it by dh when we first met, found it incredibly brilliant. I studied FLW for my EngLit A level and was v. happy to read another Fowles. Not read the collector, though.
