I am torn between Fanny Dashwood from Sense and Sensibility and Mrs Elton from Emma.

Also, while we are idling away a gloomy Monday, which Austen character do you most want to live with. I want to be adopted by the Musgroves.

I love Captain and Mrs Harville also .. but like the Crofts , I expect they'd also bee off in a Man of War pronto at the first sign of trouble and expect you to thrive on ships biscuit..

What do we think of James Benwick? Lost Soul? orFar too Easily Consolable (as JA seems to think )

Laska2Meryls · 04/01/2022 20:15

be not bee (duh)

Laska2Meryls · 04/01/2022 20:18

Lets talk about Heroes ..

Who do you think is the best?

Colonel Brandon? (but I am sadly biased here because of Alan Rickman)
Wentworth? (ditto because of Ciaran Hinds)

florentina1 · 04/01/2022 21:41

My Hero is Lydia Bennett. She doe not give a stuff about anyone. I think she will lead Wickham a fair old dance.

Persuasion is my favourite, but I think Wentworth should haven come back for Anne when he made his fortune.

Mansfield Park and Northanger are full of wets,

I also like John Knightly for his Sardonic humour.

Part of the establishment yes, but I’ve always felt that the job description was a licensed pirate

A privateer was a licensed pirate. Royal Navy officers had to put up with doing the boring bits, such as months of blockade duty, when there was little chance of any prize money, but which could actually do more to win the war than winning a naval battle.

Have you read Joan Aiken’s sequel Mansfield Revisited?

I knew someone had written a Susan-Tom romance, but couldn't think who. I've read most of her stuff - and her sister's - but don't think I've read that.

I love Charles Musgrove

Poor Charles. Not terribly bright, but good natured, an affectionate son, brother and father, and is stuck with the awful Mary, whom he puts up with remarkably well.

I once read critique of Persuasion which pointed out that although Anne is initially presented as such a poor thing, she is pursued by virtually every male character in the book - which is quite true, even the married ones are fond of her in a fatherly or brotherly way. The only man who doesn't appreciate her is her own father.

StColumbofNavron · 05/01/2022 16:26

Henry Crawford - I would definitely have married him.

I like all the cads really - don't mind Wickham, quite like Willoughby.

StColumbofNavron · 05/01/2022 16:34

I would live a life of fun and frolicks with Lydia (and possibly Wickham).

Having said that Wentworth is my favourite and if he loved me like he loved Anne, then, you know ...

NewYearSue · 05/01/2022 16:37

I like Mr John Knightley.
I really think Frank Churchill is a good baddie. Because he is very plausibly considered a good guy but isn't at all.

CheeseplantJungle · 05/01/2022 17:09

I read Emma young and naïve enough to be astonished that the father-figure neighbour suddenly proposed marriage and was accepted. I need a reread. Why was Frank a baddie?

Ozanj · 05/01/2022 17:10

Darcy Grin

NewYearSue · 05/01/2022 17:13

He plays with everyone but in particular the young woman he is secretly engaged to.

NewYearSue · 05/01/2022 17:14

Sorry, that's in respect of Frank Churchill.

CheeseplantJungle · 05/01/2022 17:36

Thanks. I’m due a reread I think.

PermanentTemporary · 05/01/2022 17:44

Favourite hero? Henry Tilsley. Rational, rich, witty, cute and fond of a shopping trip.

SuburbanCrofter · 05/01/2022 17:44

NewYearSue you mean Jane Fairfax. I can never understand why Emma doesn't like her - because she's not chatty enough??

Also, favourite baddy not from an Austen book but mentioned above - St John Rivers. He is such a chilling depiction of sexual repression and misogyny dressed up as piety.

SuburbanCrofter · 05/01/2022 17:45

PermanentTemporary, Henry Tilsley is obviously gay, isn't he!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 05/01/2022 17:46

Mrs Bennett

PermanentTemporary · 05/01/2022 17:54

I think Henry's certainly a woman's idea of a great husband, which may be the same thing in some cases. Was Jane Austen gay? Surely some have speculated about it.

Filmbuffmum · 05/01/2022 17:57

The recent one man play with Mr Wickham (same actor as the 1995 version) celebrating his 60th birthday was absolutely delicious, one of the best sequels I have read or seen.

PermanentTemporary · 05/01/2022 18:00

Filmbuffmum, was that on screen anywhere?

Filmbuffmum · 05/01/2022 18:04

Looks as if you can buy access until the end of January. Relatively expensive but I watched it this way and I promise it is worth it originaltheatreonline.com/productions/28/being-mr-wickham

SuburbanCrofter · 05/01/2022 18:04

PermanentTemporary, I don't get the sense Jane Austen was gay (particularly not based on the fact that she didn't want to get married - there are plenty of other good reasons for making that choice! Grin) But I think she would have met and enjoyed gay men, without realising that's what they were.

SuburbanCrofter · 05/01/2022 18:06

That looks fantastic Filmbuffmum! I'm imagining Rowley Birkin QC-style ramblings Grin

Filmbuffmum · 05/01/2022 18:12

It really is huge fun, and Adrian Lukis still has the perfect twinkle in his eye. Hard to be cross with his Wickham for long!

Twicklette · 05/01/2022 18:17

@Laska2Meryls

She has written some great villains ... just adding The Crawfords and Aunt Norris to the list..

But then some of her heroes are not terribly heroic .. Gawd... Edmund Bertram.. what a pompous twit.. I certainly wouldn't want to live with him . ..

THe Crawfords are not villains. Think when Aunt Norris is having a go at Fanny Price, Mary Crawford sticks up for her. "it is too hot for me here'. I think if Henry Crawford had married Fanny, she would have been the making of him. Lucy Steele and Fanny Dashwood (the occasional use of a pony is quite sufficient) are horrible people.
