I'm really struggling at the moment and everything I'd usually want to read is a variation on the same theme (someone knows her secret from years ago and her perfect life is coming apart at the seams).
It's probably easier to say what I'm not keen on, apologies in advance for fussiness

  • books that jump around ("Tim, 1992", "Laura, 2002", "Anna, present day")
  • books where huge chunks of the text are in the bad guys head, usually in italics, where he does mundane things in a vaguely sinister way
  • books with thousands of characters where you're forever looking back to decide which one was Adam, and why shoukd I care he was in the garden at the wedding
  • books with overt violence, rape or gore. If a child is in danger there needs to be a happy ending.
Im sure my list will grown but that'll do for now.

The missing by CL Taylor is good. I like most of her books although they do jump around in time a bit. Strangers is another good one. Just easy to read thrillers

StealthPolarBear · 01/01/2022 17:22

I have read some c l Taylor and enjoyed them but nit that one thank you, so I will try it. I've also found a few others by that author I've not read which is great.

I like Claire Macintosh books. I let you go was probably the best one.

StealthPolarBear · 01/01/2022 17:25

Again, have read and enjoyed lots by that author, will check for others thank you

I have recently been really enjoying older classic thrillers by Eric Ambler. Not only were they well-written, I have learnt quite a bit about 20th century historical events that aren't discussed much these days, like the Great Fire of Smyrna, or the kidnapping and murder of Aldo Moro.

SOLINVICTUS · 02/01/2022 20:53

My favourite of recent years was Three Hours, but I have a feeling you've read it Stealth- I seem to remember being on a thread with you about it.

Have you read any Gordon Stevens? Bit old now but he's my favourite non-psycho-neighbour thriller writer. Political thrillers mainly. Can highly recommend Provo and Kara's Game.

highlandcoo · 02/01/2022 21:10

How about Robert Goddard? Past Caring is a good one to start with. Easy to read and an intriguing mystery.

Or Robert Harris? Either Enigma, Fatherland or The Ghost. Not classic thrillers but you might enjoy them.

I also love Christopher Brookmyre. The amount of violence in them varies but it's usually cartoon-like violence to the baddies, not disturbing stuff. The black comedy element is really entertaining. One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night is a good one. A school reunion on an oil rig that goes horribly wrong.

littlemisslozza · 02/01/2022 21:18

Have you read any of Steve Cavanagh's books? Thirteen is particularly good but the whole Eddie Flynn series is enjoyable.

StealthPolarBear · 02/01/2022 22:23

Good recommendations thank you everyone.
Yes I loves three hours. Haven't read any of her others, but might look again.
I have read and really enjoyed Steve kavanagh. A bit macho but a good counter to the 'woman with a secret past' thriller.

Blood Orange was quite good
Cara Hunter - poss a bit more police procedural than thriller
The standalone Karin Slaughters rather than the series
I suppose Lisa Jewell falls into the secret category! (My Sunday pleasures!)
The Silent Patient
I'm listening to A Perfect Stranger at the moment. It's fine as thrillers go!

MeredithGreyishblue · 02/01/2022 22:37

Although some of those do flip between narrators. Sorry

SFisnotsimple · 02/01/2022 22:39

Just finished Ascension by Oliver Harris which I'd recommend.

HaroldMeeker · 02/01/2022 22:45

I enjoyed "Want to play?" by PJ Tracy and the others in the series that I've read.

thenightsky · 02/01/2022 22:47

Mark Edwards stuff is good. The Magpies had me gripped.

Aftertheharvest · 02/01/2022 22:48

I started A Silent Death by Peter May this morning and am 300 pages in - bit risky recommending when I haven't finished but has been gripping enjoyable read

HighlandCowbag · 02/01/2022 22:52

Have you read the Tanya French dublin murder detective series? Police procedural but also standalone books in their own right. Her other 2 novels are good as well. The Wytcher Tree I think and The Seeker?

I've seen blood orange recommended before but never got into it. I think i need to tey again. Lisa jewell probably got me into the 'secret' type books ten years I don't hate them on principle, copycats are just churning them out now.

No I'm happy with that thanks :) can cope with a slightly rubbish ending (hopefully it won't be) for a gripping book in general

I absolutely love tana French, buy all her books as soon as thwyre out in hard back. That said, I found the latest one quite hard going. Maybe just wasn't in the right frame of mind.

Don't waste your time looking at other Rosamund Luptons. They're baaaaaad. I snapped up everything she's written after reading Three Hours and boy oh boy.

Careful with Mark Edwards- there are two. One is the Magpies one, and one is a really shit sci-fi writer. Even Amazon get it wrong sometimes as to which is which. They definitely have one listed as "from the writer of the Magpies" but then it's the rubbish one.
