Recommend me some books please

I am aiming to read 3 - 4 books per month in 2022.

I like crime fiction (Karen Slaughter/Val McDermott type), ghost stories (James Herbert's Ghost Of Sleath is a favourite but also loved The Woman in Black) and general fiction. I am fairly low brow in my tastes but will generally give anything a go and I have Kindle Unlimited, so extra points if they are free on there. I am attempting to read everyday to beat my reading streak.

Can anyone recommend some books please?

Try Lee Child books about Jack Reacher - there are a ton of them
Would dystopian novels interest you? I really enjoyed The Hunger Games trilogy

I don’t have kindle but at a guess would there be some Agatha Christie books on there.

Thanks. Ill add those to my list.

I think you would like Kate Ellis. She writes mysteries where there's a historical story running alongside and is a bit spooky!

highlandcoo · 01/01/2022 08:43

For something slightly different, you could try The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. She's written some other excellent books, but this is her supernatural/ghostly one.

Ooh thank you.

If you like Golden Era / early 20th century crime there are loads of the British Library Crime Classics on Kindle Unlimited. The short story collections are a good way to find which authors you like.
Also an awesome historic crime author is SG Maclean, really love their work. I also love Val McDermott so hopeful these are a good fit for you!

Glenthebattleostrich · 01/01/2022 11:26

I've not tried them, I'll have a look thanks

Sara Paretsky VI Warshawski series
Sue Grafton's Alphabet series
David Baldacci The Camel Club series
Dana Stabenow - detective series set in Alaska
Michael Crichton State of Fear

Jo Nesbø's Harry Hole detective novels are excellent as are Håkan Nesser's Van Veeteren series.

For a totally cheesy and easy read - try Marnie Riches The Girl Who..... (George McKenzie) series, about a British psychologist/criminologist and a Dutch detective (they are decidedly low-brow but a fun read)

Chronicles if St Mary’s - Jodi Taylor

The Heatwave - Kate Riordan - really enjoyed this

I've just downloaded a free kindle one called Ladies Midnight Swimming Club by Faith Hogan. Enjoying it so far

Monolithique · 02/01/2022 20:03

Susan Hill's Simon Serrailler series is great.
Anything by Tana French.

tobytoes1403 · 02/01/2022 20:33

Peter James is an amazing author- his Roy Graces series are really good. Also Kate Ellis series, Rachel Lynch series and Angela Marsons series

Free on Kindle Unlimited - NY set crime novels by SR Garrae - first is Death in Focus.
Other crime novels: JD Robb, Tess Gerritsen, Minette Walters, Ann Cleeves, Alex Gray; classics by Margery Allingham, Dorothy Sayers, Ngaio Marsh, Edmund Crispin, Patricia Wentworth; then also slapstick silly by Janet Evanovich (very lightweight).
If you like SF/fantasy: another recommendation for Jodi Taylor; but also Lois McMaster Bujold (any or all, they are brilliant); Ben Aaronovitch. Slightly eco-feminist SF - Sheri Tepper.
Paranormal fun: Patricia Briggs, Ilona Andrews, Nalini Singh.

@hidingmystatus May I say you have excellent taste! Either that or you've somehow been spying on my bookshelves. Lol I was trying to remember Edmund Crispin when I posted previously!
Another excellent period crime series which is light but well constructed is Carola Dunn's Daisy Dalrymple series.

hidingmystatus · 03/01/2022 17:19

@Pashazade I love crime novels - my Kindle is absolutely full of them and my local library crime shelves are my favourite haunt. I've also read - but others have already recommended - a whole lot of the Scandi noir, Val McDermid, etc, but I don't always remember all the authors!
I should have added Tom Straw - as himself or as "Richard Castle" (spin off from a TV series); Elizabeth Peters, Georgette Heyer's mysteries (though her romances are great too); Helen Cox; Kelley Armstrong's crime fiction (though she also writes Paranormal); Kerry Greenwood; LJ Ross; Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling); Ruth Dudley Edwards (brilliantly sardonic and skewering the Establishment). Jill Paton Walsh wrote some follow-ups to Dorothy Sayers, but also some books of her own (Imogen Quy, I think).

Like I said - I love crime fiction.

hidingmystatus · 03/01/2022 17:20

Oh, yes, and I've read the Daisy Dalrymples as well!

FatPatsCat · 03/01/2022 17:23

Lisa Jewell?

NutCheeseBag · 03/01/2022 17:24

@highlandcoo

For something slightly different, you could try The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters. She's written some other excellent books, but this is her supernatural/ghostly one.
Also, Affinity by Sarah Walters. Also recommend Louise Candlish, especially The Heights and The Other Passenger, and for horror Adam Nevill The Ritual
Pashazade · 03/01/2022 18:30

Hmm must have recommended them somewhere else (thought I'd already put them on here) but historical murder mystery by SG Maclean. The Seeker books are set during Cromwell's protectorate. Really really good and pretty unique for setting.
