Feeling a bit blue, the kids and I have been quite poorly over last few months, I’m feeling very drained at the moment with it all.

Looking for some recommendations please to get me through the winter nights.
Just finished 5 books by Cathy Bramley, I did enjoy these books and also read The Switch (can’t remember author right now) and liked that too, but looking for something more than a typical romance.

I'm currently reading The Woman who Went to Bed for a Year which I'm enjoying a lot.

Thank you for the recommendation @JaneJeffer, I’ve heard of this book. I will give this a read Smile

Jenny Colgan, for comforting books set in sweet shops or cafes. or her series set on the Scottish island for a real community feel.
Karen Swann has written loads of Christmas themed books and is another of my recent discoveries.
Currently reading The Other Passenger by Louise Candlish which is fab.

Perhaps try one of Rachel Joyce's books .They are gently amusing. The latest is Miss Benson's Beetle.
There's a trilogy by Lissa Evans. Crooked Heart, Old Baggage and V for Victory., which are witty and heartwarming

Anything by Jill Mansell or Katie Fforde

PG Wodehouse. Very silly indeed.

HotSauceCommittee · 03/01/2022 17:32

I'm reading Bob Mortimer's autobiography and it is great. So funny.

Love Nina by Nina Stibbe. Very very funny anecdotes of nannying in north London. I think her employer was the editor of London Review of Books , and various literati pop round including Alan Bennet who lives next door. All this intelligentsia makes like impression on Nina as she delightfully muddles her way through.

I’m making it sound a bit make dropping and grim but it’s the opposite . A breath of fresh air and very very funny.

Do They Know It's Christmas Yet? by Johnny Brookes

It's about a brother & sister who end up going back to 1984 and accidentally ruining Band Aid. Very silly but I enjoyed it, and there is a sequel featuring Paul Daniels Grin.

glasshouse · 03/01/2022 20:32

I'd go for Terry Pratchett, possibly Soul Music, endless opportunities for groaning at the bands mentioned. But really, any Pratchett makes me laugh.

Well I loved Sandi Toksvig's Number 12 bus. I think it had some amusing moments. However I enjoyed it because I used to live in East Dulwich which is on it's route so may not have as much relevance to you.

I also enjoyed Bill Bryston's stuff and Terry Pratchett's as well. Oh and Jo Brand's book about when she was a psychiatric nurse.

Teaandbiscuits40 · 24/01/2022 11:58

Thank you all for the recommendations, I have ordered a few and lucky enough to spot a couple books in local charity shop. So I now have a stack on books ready to read!
@Deathraystare I know East Dulwich very well and the number 12 bus route! Can’t wait to read this book Smile

The tent, the bucket and me by Emma Kennedy is definitely light and laugh out loud :)

Valkyrie40 · 24/01/2022 21:01

The woman who went to bed for a year is great - as is anything by Sue Townsend (have you read the Adrian mole books OP? I always return to them when I need a laugh)

I would also recommend any of Jenny Eclair's books - very funny.

The Rosie Project. Really different to anything else I’ve read and had me laughing out loud. Great characters.
