Recommendations if I like these books

I have read way too many lacklustre or just decidedly badly written "thriller" novels recently.
Many of them allegedly bestsellers.

I don't want to waste my time reading anything else that I will regret.

Books I've loved in the past:

Into The Darkest Corner
You (Caroline Kepnes)
Gone Girl
The Kind Worth Killing (Peter Swanson)
I Let You Go (Clare Mackintosh)

I also like some older ghosty ones like Naomi's Room and The Haunting of Hill House.

Any recommendations?

I've just read The Girl on The Landing, which might be your sort of book?

VictoryLap · 17/12/2021 19:35

Thank you, I will have a look for that

Silent Companions by Laura Purcell.

I love thrillers novels.

I've most recently read The Nanny, the playground murders and the woman murder club series by James Patterson and Maxine ???? only books 1-4 so far.

I'm reading Fallen by Karin Slaughter and that seems OK so far. I've read a few of her books.

The Nanny, is that by Leila Slimani?

I haven't read any Karin Slaughter but I might give them a go as been recommended to me before.

Ditto James Patterson.

Kate Atkinson?

I used to often pick up a Robert Goddard if I was in the mood for a thriller but haven't read him in ages.

VictoryLap · 19/12/2021 19:31

Thanks I've not read any Kate Atkinson - will give them a go.

Oh she's great. And her writing just keeps getting better!

Pine - Francine Toon - it’s a bit unsettling but a bit of a slow burn.
Burial Rites - Hannah Kent for something similar.
The Shadow of the Wind gets recommended a lot but it’s definitely worth the hype, and has a few other books that exist in the same world.

I just read Rubbernecker for my book group and it was fantastic. Also, if you like Gone Girl, I read one of her earlier ones called Sharp Objects, also v good.

The wynch elm - Tana French. Brilliant

VictoryLap · 19/12/2021 22:02

@Pinkstegosaurus Thabk you I'll have a look at them

@Himawarigirl Yes I've seen the series of that which I enjoyed. I don't think I could read the book after seeing the series though.

Tana French is great. I love Faithful Place. Also the Quirke novels by Benjamin Black (John Banville’s nom de plume:,police murder case procedurals but the protagonist is the Dublin city pathologist in the 50s. Page-turners with great period detail, and beautifully written too.
And Megan Abbott: she’s written quite a few but I really liked The Turnout; mystery/psychological thriller set in a ballet school.
