Inspired by the thread for a 13 year old boy looking for new ideas of books for DD. She reads about 3 books a week so she gets through lots and need some new ideas.
She likes detective/spy books but with a female lead which makes it trickier. Doesn’t want to read sex scenes or too much swearing. She has read lots of the obvious choices so more unusual picks would be great. Thanks

My 13 yr old DD sounds quite similar and likes Miss Marple or any Agatha Christie - has she tried that?

Also the Murder Most Unladylike series.

Margperry · 05/12/2021 20:41

My daughter just read the Hunger Games books and loved them.

Timeforabiscuit · 05/12/2021 20:51

Etiquette and espionage series by Gail Carriger - its more young adult steam punk, but brilliant.

Zebee · 05/12/2021 20:57

She hasn’t tried Agatha christie or miss marple so they might be worth a shot. Really enjoyed the murder most unladylike books.
Added etiquette and espionage to the list that looks good. And will add hunger games to the list too. It is great that she loves reading but need an endless supply of books.

I don't think that my mother ever suggested what I should read. Don't children go to the library anymore?

Zebee · 05/12/2021 21:11

@eddiemairswife Yes she can find ideas for herself but I am so pleased that she is reading that I m happy to add some suggestions. (She is dyslexic and reading lots has done fabulous things for her English work so happy to help).
Good to get some new ideas.

My DD seems to have quite a good book swap thing going on with a friend with similar tastes/reading ability - worth suggesting too?

Corneliusmurphy · 05/12/2021 21:18

Dd is the same age, has read the murder most unladylike and this year read a lot of Agatha Christie (it’s referenced in the mmu books I believe) I introduced her to Terry Pratchett, she now rates Good Omens as her favourite book, but has worked her way through the witches set, the guards set and is now on Death.
She rereads Harry Potter whenever bored, and wants the hufflepuff editions for Christmas, enjoyed the noughts and crosses collection, also the hunger games.
She also likes Karen m McManus, loads really - also someone who leaves the library with a pile of books!

Stokey · 05/12/2021 21:20

She sounds like my DD who is 12. Has she read the Karen McManus books? We Were Liars is another one she liked.
She loves all the Dystopian stuff like Hunger Games, Divergent, Chaos Walking & The Maze Runner. She's currently reading the Twilight series.

She has tried a couple of Agatha Christie which she liked, but not as much as she likes the more modern stuff. Murder on the Orient Express is a good one to start with if she hasn't seen it, or Hercule Poirot's Christmas at this time of year.
She's asked for Sarah J Maas books for Christmas as one of her friends has recommended them.

Corneliusmurphy · 05/12/2021 21:24

@stokey I’m sure you’ve checked but some of the Sarah J Maas books are definitely for older readers, fair amount of sex scenes/violence (I thought they were great 😂) but I wouldn’t be giving them to a 12 year old.

Stokey · 05/12/2021 21:28

Oh that's good to know @Corneliusmurphy. I hadn't checked as she just said her friends were reading The Court of Thorns & Roses series 😬 it's a bit tricky with some of the YA stuff, hard to know without reading it yourself if it's suitable.

The Night School series by CJ Daugherty look like vampire books from the covers but are actually spy school, DD had them when she was about that age (and I read them too & enjoyed them :) )

Corneliusmurphy · 05/12/2021 22:19

@stokey that’s the one with all the sex! I’d say probably over 15s, in fairness I wouldn’t necessarily be horrified if dd read them (my mum wouldn’t have had a clue what I was reading at that age) but I definitely wouldn’t give them to her on purpose iynwim.
It’s tricky at our old library those were in the adult section but current library puts them with young adult where dd gets a lot of her books from.
I think it’s her throne of glass books which is for younger teens.

ChessieFL · 06/12/2021 12:14

Has she read the Ruby Redfort series?

Stokey · 06/12/2021 13:51

@Corneliusmurphy, thanks so much! I mean I think I was reading Riders, Flowers In The Attic & various Jackie Collins not much older than that but not sure I want to actively encourage that in my own DD!
