Just that really. DD is a young teenager and fascinated by all things Italian. I've bought her the first Donna Leon book but wondered if anyone could recommend any other fiction favourites set in Italy?

How young?
The Elena Ferrante books are set in Italy and are studied by teens in Italian high school (14+)
If she likes crime, maybe the Montalbano series.
Some of the Netflix series set in Italy have been based on books and may be suitable.

That Summer in Ischia by Penny Feeney. It is about a kidnap of a child so depending on your DD's maturity it may be a bit of for her, but it is the sort of book I'd have devoured as a teen.

Only in Naples is good.

iwonttaketheeasyroad · 24/11/2021 11:42

My Beautiful Friend Trilogy by Elena Ferrante. Set in Naples. Also a sky adaptation if she wants to watch it

LIZS · 24/11/2021 11:44

EM Forster - Room with a View etc

drunkensailorette · 24/11/2021 11:57

The Island by Victoria Hislop? Depends how old your dd is really.

tripfiction · 24/11/2021 17:46

There might be some titles of interest here (YA) www.tripfiction.com/find-a-book/?location=Italy&btitle=&bauthor=&genre=Young+Adult

The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke is set in Venice, Inkheart by the same author is also set in Italy. Romeo and Juliet is set in Italy and probably being a young teenager is the perfect time to watch it. She might be a bit young for The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant but it's a romantic read about renaissance Florence, alternatively The Smile by Donna Jo Napoli is a Young Adult book that looks to have similar themes.

The Stravaganza series by Mary Hoffmann.

yoshiblue · 25/11/2021 14:50

Definitely My Brilliant Friend

TwinklyBranch · 25/11/2021 14:55

One Italian Summer by Keris Stainton.
Also, I know you asked for books, but she might also like the film Love Is All You Need with Pierce Brosnan. It's in Danish but has subtitles and I wanted to run away to Italy after seeing it!

Vargas · 30/11/2021 22:13

Thanks all! I've read My Brilliant Friend and didn't even think of it, I'm trying to remember if it's suitable..,

I'll look up all the others, starting with the Montalbano as dd loves mysteries.

@drunkensailorette - I think The Island is about Crete?

@Helpstopthepain - Only in Naples looks great, thanks!
@JaninaDuszejko - thanks for suggestions, she's actually doing R+J at school so I can leave that one!
@LIZS - great suggestion, and I would love to re-read it too, thanks.
@TwinklyBranch - That film looks fab! I've never even heard of it, I'm deffo going to watch it with her as I love PB....
@tripfiction - great website, thank you, lots to consider there.

I'm only just realising how many books are called One Italian Summer Grin.

Thanks for all My Brilliant Friend suggestions, I think we will try to watch it together, the series looks great.

Room With a View
The Enchanted April
How To Be Both (though I can't remember if this has anything unsuitable for a young teen)

fernfarm · 01/12/2021 15:59

Just asked my older teen daughter, and she recommends The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke.

Vargas · 02/12/2021 18:13

Thanks @fernfarm! I must be the only person in the world who didn't love An Enchanted April but maybe dd will feel differently.
