An anyone recommend a really good audio book?

I've just finished Bob Mortimer's autobiography, which I loved! Fiction or non-fiction suggestions are welcome and don't mind the genre. All I ask is for a good narrator!

I liked The Midnight Library (Matt Haig), narrated by Carey Mulligan, the Wolf Hall trilogy and I have just started Lamentations by CJ Samson and am enjoying it. I also liked The Handmaid's Tale. Found it more harrowing than the TV show though.

I've also got Poirot's greatest hits or whatever the literary equivalent is. It has a full cast and I like that as they all have different voices (obviously)

Ooh I like the sound of the Poirot. I've just downloaded the The Midnight Library as it's included in my membership so think I will start with that one!

I’m reading the JD Kirk DCI Logan series narrated by Angus King.

If you like Scottish accents, murder mystery, swearing and sarky dark humour - get in!

I’m currently listening to “the big man upstairs” - the protagonist has just bumped off women who met on mumsnet. Grin

Kobna Holbrook Smith narrates the Rivers of London series and he's brilliant. I googled him after the first one I listened to and turns out he's an actor so that makes sense.
Thursday Murder Club narrator is also very good, Lesley Manville.
Third recommendation is The Moonstone, narrated by Peter Jeffrey.

devildeepbluesea · 23/11/2021 17:49

Also loved Thursday Murder Club (actually enjoyed the second one more)

I've just finished the first two of the Charles Holbourne series by Simon Michael. Unfortunately no other books in the series are done yet but they were great. Also included in your Audible subscription if you have one.

Other great listens:
Simon Serrailler series
Feathering mysteries written and read by Simon Brett (sort of cosy crime, but very engaging)
Absolutely adored The Appeal by Janice Hallett
Also anything by Robert Goddard

Thanks for all the recommendations. I have lots to get my teeth into. I love trying different books. The one I listened to prior to Bob, was The Woman in Black by Susan Hill. Very atmospheric and I do love a gothic horror.

"Where the crawdads sing" is excellent audio version. It's a fabulous book but the audio really makes it.

Currently listening to liane Moriaty 'apples never fall" the Australian narrator is fabulous!

The tattooist of auschwitz -beautifully written and narrated.

The hearts invisible furies-fabulous! One of my favourites

The graham Norton books are good, easy listening. Narrated by the man himself.

I've got heaps of crime/thrillers too which I've enjoyed but I can't particularly remember the narrators. I don't stick with a badly narrated book though. It gets returned if I can't get on with them or they clack & swallow a lot! 🤮

devildeepbluesea · 23/11/2021 18:09

@JennetHumfrye Susan Hill wrote the Serrailler series too, so should be right up your street

Tippytaps · 23/11/2021 18:14

Invisible Women, it is narrated by the author Caroline Criado-Perez

The whole Anne of Green Gables collection. It'll keep you happy for 75hrs!

TheOrigRights · 23/11/2021 18:19

To be fair it might not meet your gothic horror remit!

Oh I love Anne of Green Gables. I read the books religiously as a child and I loved the 80s TV adaptation. I like all sorts really.

I recently listened to Nicci French's Drieda Klein series on audio. Excellent narrator, loved the stories - deliciously dark and satisfying well told. Must be read in the correct order because of the underlying story that connects them all and which is begun in the first, Blue Monday.

SummerOrAutumn · 24/11/2021 06:06

Frieda Klein

I listened to the whole Anne of Green Gables during the first major lockdown. So many memories of it as it was my favourite series as a child. Really found it so relaxing and calming at that horrible time.

I agree. It's food for the soul. I even got used to terms such as ejaculated and spunk Grin

If you haven’t started the st Mary’s chronicles by Jodi Taylor then u need to start. The books are amazing. But Zara ramm as the narrator is amazing

Maggiesgirl · 27/11/2021 13:27

@AlphabetAerobics if you love JD Kirk, try Stuart McBride, very similar and again read with a Scots accent.

cortex10 · 27/11/2021 13:55

The Lost Cafe Schindler by Muriel Schindler - fascinating true story of her family in 20th century Austria

The Bruno Chef de Police series by Martin Walker set in the Dordogne

Kiss Myself Goodbye by Ferdinand Mount about his Aunt Munca's very colourful life

Widowland by CJ Carey - a twist on the 'what if England had lost ww2' theme

tobee · 17/12/2021 02:34

I always recommend Anna Massey reading "Rebecca"

tobee · 17/12/2021 02:34

And Peter Firth reading Regeneration Trilogy

StruggleStreet · 17/12/2021 02:45

I’ve just finished reading Seth Rogen Yearbook and found it absolutely hilarious. I read the kindle version but there is an audiobook version too.

More than a Woman by Caitlin Moran is another good one, and Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey

hagsrus0 · 17/12/2021 05:57

Norah Lofts, especially the Sussex Trilogy (Knight's Acre et al) And I'm just now listening to Gads Hall / The Haunting of Gads Hall

Also enjoy the Shardlake series, and Simon Vance reading Aubrey/Maturin

Nigel Planer or Stephen Briggs reading Terry Pratchett.
