Robin Hobb - fantasy series

I just finished the last book in Robin Hobb's Realm of the Elderlings novels.

A little bit nerdy, but I absolutely loved them all and now feel sad that it's finished! I love her writing, she writes such incredible complex characters.

Anyone else a fan?

Any other recommendations of similar series?

I also loved them!

Check out Patrick Rothfuss Kingkiller Chronicles and the The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch!

I haven't read realm of the elderlings but absolutely loved the Farseer trilogy and read it for the second time recently. The Tawny man trilogy was good too but it's been about 10 years and I'm due a second read.

AnaViaSalamanca · 19/11/2021 22:01

I never read that one but I loved her farseer trilogies. Are they around the same time as the farseer or much before in the elderling era?

@MilduraS these is a new trilogy too, fitz and fool, to conclude the series. You should read it if you haven’t

MilduraS · 20/11/2021 10:09

@AnaViaSalamanca I didn't realise there was another trilogy! Will have to buy it today. I remember feeling bereft when I finally finished the Tawny Man trilogy and realised it was over.

ArabeI · 20/11/2021 10:22

I can't see she's written anything since the Fitz and the Fool trilogy, the last of those was a couple of years ago I think.

All very good, of course. Ignoring the Soldier trilogy (which I don't think was set in the elderling realm in any case).

HaroldMeeker · 20/11/2021 11:03

Have you tried Tad Williams' Memory, Sorrow and Thorn trilogy? I also second The Lies of Locke Lamora and further 2 books in that series.
Also The Painted Man series, though I've yet to read the final book.

UnaOfStormhold · 20/11/2021 11:44

Lois McMaster Bujold's World of the five gods series (starting either with Curse of Chalion or Penric's Demon) would probably suit you well - amazing characters and world building.

Katherine Kerr Deverry series - it's old but I still like it

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 27/11/2021 10:27

I love Robin Hobb! I've not found many other authors that I loved in the same way, but I second Monster's recommendations, although be warned, the Rothfuss series is not finished and not sure whether/when it will be, which is frustrating as I got very into the first ones and am now left dangling... The Locke Lamora ones are more stand-alone, though I'm still very impatient for the next one to come out!

Doomscrolling · 27/11/2021 10:30

Monster's recommendations are great. Locke Lamora was an absolute corker! I've not read all the Robin Hobbs, but the Liveships and Assassin trilogies are wonderful.

SexyNeckbeard · 27/11/2021 10:39

It's not quite same but I love Robin Hobb she's my favourite author and I also adore naomi noviks uprooted and to a lesser extent spinning silver. Its not high fantasy and is more YA but Frances Hardinge is also a very innovative writer

toastfiend · 27/11/2021 10:59

I love Robin Hobb, she's my favourite author by a mile.

Second the recommendations for the Kingkiller series and The Lies of Locke Lamora. I also really like Joe Abercrombie, The First Law series is excellent, although more Game of Thrones style in terms of how brutal they can be.

Brandon Sanderson is also great and there's loads to get your teeth into there. The Stormlight Archive series is great, and I loved the Mistborn trilogy.

I’ve always meant to read some of her books, where should I start?

I'd start with The Farseer Trilogy. Smile

Also just seen that the Assassin's Apprentice, the first book in the series, is very reduced on Amazon atm.

Assassins apprentice - everything leads off from there. The liveship books are set in the same world but will make much more sense if you read the assassin books first
HaroldMeeker · 27/11/2021 17:37

Out of interest - which of the five series' within the Liveships / Assassin sets is your favourite if you're a Robin Hobb fan like me?

I absolutely love the Dragon Keeper series - something about that just caught me completely. I pretty much read it every year.

CovidCorvid · 27/11/2021 18:58

Thanks, will order assassin’s apprentice.

CovidCorvid · 27/11/2021 19:00

Oh that’s hilarious…..Amazon tells me I bought the kindle edition in 2012….off to find it in my online library. 👍😆

CovidCorvid · 27/11/2021 19:01

Even funnier, my kindle tells me I’ve read it. Story does look a bit familiar….
