I can’t for the life of me remember the name!

I read it when I was maybe 14/15/16 I think so circa 1998. I remember very little of it (aside that I loved it) but it was about a girl who ends up getting pregnant and I think it ends with her and her baby living in a cottage that used to be owned by her grandmother. Maybe working as an artist? In my mind she has long wavy auburn hair but I don’t know if that was just in my imagination.

I’ve often thought of harnessing the power of the nest of vipers on this one so hopefully someone can help me find its name based on this pathetically inadequate amount of information 🙏🏻

Howard's End by EM Forster? It's Edwardian and there was a good film.

Whatever happens this thread has helped me remember "This is me speaking"! There are no detailed synopses online sadly but it does fit from my recollection.

Is it The Cliff Path? The second part of The Shouting Wind trilogy by Linda Newberry?

The first one (The Shouting Wind) was set in WW2, about a girl who joins the WAAF. The second part (The Cliff Path) is about her daughter in the 70s: she runs off with her artist boyfriend and ends up becoming pregnant. The third part (A Fear of Heights) was about her daughter going to University and was set in the 90s.

I came on to say The Cliff Path too. I think you might be remembering two stories tho if it is that one. There is the long willowy hair there though.

'Junk' by Melvin Burgess? Can't remember the exact ending, but I'm sure there's a baby involved.

BreadmanAndCake · 29/10/2021 09:44

I think there was one called 'and baby makes two' or something along those lines which sounds quite similar although might have been written later

Another vote for the L-shaped room. God, I loved that book!

bookworm14 · 29/10/2021 09:52

I came on here to say The Cliff Path but I see someone got there first. It definitely sounds like that one to me. www.goodreads.com/book/show/1613934.The_Cliff_Path

It’s not Easy Connections if the grandmother/cottage bit is correct but Cathy does have the hair and is an artist.

RedLemon · 29/10/2021 13:34

It’s the Cliff Path! I remember the cover!! THANK YOU!!!

You know that feeling when you can’t remember something and then it suddenly comes to you at 3am- this is my 3am!!! (Except it’s been a good decade coming.)

Lots of other great book memories too- I definitely read Dear Nobody and pretty sure I read Easy Connections now that I think if it.

I love you all! Thank you!!

Hooray - it’s so satisfying when one of these is solved! The other books in that trilogy are great as well (The Shouting Wind and A Fear of Heights).

RedLemon · 29/10/2021 16:27

I definitely remember now reading at least one other book in that trilogy. Off to find them online now!

Glad to see you found it OP!

VikingNorthUtsire · 04/11/2021 18:41

@SunlessSea I have been longing to read Easy Connections again - sounds like maybe better to stay away! I loved it as a teen but what I remember of the plot contains some EXTREMELY dubious content.

NumberCurtains · 19/05/2022 18:44

Neverwhere by Neil Gaimon? I've never read it but a friend of mine described this book to me years ago and it sounds similar.

NumberCurtains · 19/05/2022 18:44

Oh, you have already found it. Ignore me!
