Crime novel recommendations- set in certain locations

I am getting my dad some crime novels but he only reads ones set in locations that are personal to him.
So far I have got

  • Ambrose Parry The Way of The Flesh for Edinburgh
  • LJ Ross Holy Island for, well, Holy Island

And I got Cara Hunter Close To Home for Oxford BUT having looked more closely I think this was a mistake as I think it could probably have been set anywhere, I'm not getting any sense of place. So I am after an alternative please.

The other places he likes are
Peak District, Yorkshire Dales, Manchester, East Anglia, Durham, Shetland, Galway, Oxford, Lake District, Hebden Bridge.
I'm not looking to find a book for every area, I could just do with one more please.

MW Craven’s books are set in Cumbria. First one is The Puppet Show.

DH likes Edinburgh based crime too, and recommends James Oswald (inspector maclean) and Doug Johnstone ("half funeral director, half private detective and half theoretical physics...") .

I've just looked up Ambrose Parry, and he says they sound good too - so thanks for that (always up for new present ideas...)! If he likes those, he may also like Chris Brookmyre ("Ambrose" is a collaboration between him and his wife who does something medical) many of which are set in Edinburgh.

I enjoy the Shetland Sailing mystery series by Marsali Taylor - The first in the series is Death on a Longship

The Zoe Boehm books by Mick Herron are set in Oxford.

I think it's interesting that when novels are meant to be set in a particular place some are very realistic whereas others use a completely made up town . Sometimes though, it's very obvious what a made up place is based on .

Ruth Galloway series- Norfolk

Agree that LJ Ross is a bit rubbish. I was going on my first holiday in Northumberland so stuck at it for the first two but couldn't face a third.

Ambrose Parry books are good. The Art of Dying, the second in the series, is also available in paperback now.

And what about Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie books? The first is set in Cambridge but she moves to Edinburgh for the second and third. I really liked When Will There Be Good News?, the third in the series. Very satisfying plot.

Bill Rogers has a series based around DCI Tom Caton who is with the Greater Manchester Major Crimes Unit. I think there are around 8 in the series.

A place of Execution by Val Mcdermid is set in the Peak District and one I'd recommend.

Liz Mistry has a couple of books with DS Parekh based on Bradford

The DS Lasser crime series by Robin Roughly is set in Wigan/Greater Manchester/Lake District areas. Not sure if they're available in print or just download but there's about 28 of them so could keep him occupied for a while Grin

YouSetTheTone I'm currently reading Edge of the Grave at the moment and really loving it. He's great at producing the 1930s post-war atmosphere.

I would also recommend The Quaker by Liam McIlvanney, son of the writer William McIlvanney, which is set in Glasgow in 1969. I have the follow up on pre-order.

Also loving the fact that everyone likes the Ambrose Parry novels. The second and third are on my list to read next. Some great suggestions on this thread so I'll be checking some out too.
