So, this is going to sound a bit mental but I'm 26 weeks pregnant.. hormonal and recently just always feel a need to cry! I'm not unhappy, just hormonal and need something to let it out to!

Which books do you recommend for this? Last book I read was The Choice by Edith Edgar and that really broke my heart💔

The kind of thing I'm looking for is something possibly war themed? I love history. But mainly something not too far fetched. Thankyou:)

I came to say the same as SpinsForGin,
The Nightingale or Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah.
For something completely different Half a World Away by Mike Gayle broke my heart a little bit at the end.

A monster calls by Philip Ness, but may be too sad!

fruckkkit · 18/10/2021 16:09

Maybe not what you're looking for as it's quite traumatic but I lost my shit over A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara - proper big snotty crying for a good couple of hours. Never has a book affected me that badly before

fruckkkit · 18/10/2021 16:12

Every Last One by Anna Quindlen, or Afterwards by Rosamund Lupton may be more the sort of thing you're looking for

Covetthee · 18/10/2021 16:12

The nightingale by Kristin Hannah
It ends with us- colleen hoover.
The hearts invisible furies- john Boyne

CarbonMonoxideParty · 18/10/2021 16:22

The day that went missing by Richard Beard.

@HelplessAndLost

Oh I’ve thought of one, the last book I read actually- Cut by Hibo Wardere. Absolutely harrowing.
That needs to be read but omg it gave me nightmares!

I loved Half A World Away. I read it on a plane and cried my eyes out. All The Lonely People is a tear jerker too!

A Monster Calls requires fluid resuscitation with me...

Another vote for The Book Thief. I've read it twice and still sobbed just as much the second time round.

Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay

Sarah’s Key by Tatiana de Rosnay
I came to say this too!

Little Boy Lost, by Marghanita Laski. Father is searching for his son who was lost in the Occupation of France. Very, very weepy.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 18/10/2021 19:27

Nearly all of Paul Gallico’s novellas - my particular favourites are The Small Miracle, and Flowers for Mrs Harris.

youngestisapsycho · 18/10/2021 19:28

The only book I’ve ever sobbed at was The Horse Whisperer.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 18/10/2021 19:28

Bridge to Terabithia is pretty good at getting the tear ducts working too.

The Book Thief, I SOBBED.
My god, the last page 😭😭😭😭

Boys don't cry by Fíona Scarlett. Still well up thinking about the characters. Best book I've read in ages

I was going to suggest A Monster Calls as well. I read the penultimate chapter in a restaurant whilst on a business trip and had to go back to my hotel room to finish the book as I was absolutely balling my eyes out. As hotdogs says it is very sad and as it deals with a mother of a young child dying it might be a bit of a tricky read at the moment. It is amazing though and if you do read it try and get the original black and white graphic version as the illustrations are astonishing and really add to the experience.
StColumbofNavron · 18/10/2021 19:36

The Island of Missing Trees by Elif Shafak recently had me in bits on the bus.

All Louis de Berniere’s books make me cry, usually in the most unexpected and mundane parts.

I am a crier though and it really doesn’t take much. I am saving A Little Life for a period in life where I can hide away and just ugly cry.

doodledeedum · 18/10/2021 19:37

Anybody out there? Marion Keyes

Ijustreallywantacat · 18/10/2021 19:38

The light between oceans. Utterly heartbreaking

StormyCornishSeas · 18/10/2021 20:05

Not a novel as such but "Life on the Refrigerator Door" by Alice Kuipers has me bawling. It's quite short so you can read the whole thing in one sitting so by the end i'm proper ugly crying
