Anyone reading this?

It's painful. So poorly written. Cringeworthy. But I look at the Audible reviews and it has lots of 5*. So is it just me then that is finding this book so awful?

It was only released on Thursday so still very new and I'm assuming not many have read it yet. I had it on pre-order because I'm a fan of his comedy and his podcast he hosts with Josh Widdicome, so was really excited to read this.

I’ve had that experience too, buy a book everyone raves about only to not like it
It’s annoying esp if you’ve been looking forward to it

I swear some reviews are manufactured, shills who are effusive

I think good on him for writing it and not getting a ghost writer like most of them do especially because he’s had to overcome a lot of shame around coming from a culture of limited aspiration and having dyslexia.
I find him to be very funny, authentic and socially intelligent.
I assume you weren’t imagine you were buying a Jane Austin novel?

I find him funny. But have you read the book?

I got Josh's, and while there's some good memories and observations, its not well written and very poorly edited, even some typos. I love the podcast though. I think they just have a lot of good will behind them. I think some publishing houses need to up the standard of their staff!

GoWalkabout · 17/10/2021 18:02

And I am laughing at bits too, I am enjoying it. I might get Rob's.

nc87651 · 17/10/2021 18:57

@GoWalkabout I've read Josh's too but I didn't grow up in the UK so most of it was lost on me Grin I didn't think the writing was too bad... wait till you read Rob's 🙈

I'll look forward to that Grin I am using it to get me off Mumsnet, might not work then!

I've felt like this about books I've read by comedians I like. I love Romesh Ranganathan but his books were terrible. I also felt like that about Sue Perkins'.

I really like Rob and Josh's podcast but decided not to get the books for that reason.

I really enjoyed this book, but I did get it on Audible, I didn't read it. I know I would have found it difficult to read as he definitely wrote it himself and, as I'm sure Rob would admit, he's no author. However, listening to it made it a really interesting, touching and very funny book, probably because he did the audio himself, so it is like him delivering his comedy in his style.

Perhaps it's worth trying the audiobook if you are a fan?

GrealishHairband · 31/10/2021 22:25

I got the audiobook and found the introduction difficult to listen to as it was very stilted but he definitely got into it and I found it quite an interesting listen. I can really relate to a lot of what he wrote which I was surprised about and thought it was an interesting take on the Celeb autobiography. I found the ‘poverty mindset’ stuff really insightful and I recognised myself a lot in what he was saying. She says eyeing the laptop open on the job I agreed to do on my only day off this week Hmm
