Quick, help!!! Our headteacher has just told us that a load of students are coming in tomorrow to observe our lessons. She wants me to do some literacy work on journeys. Can anyone think of a book for eight / nine year olds that centres around a journey? What with pregnancy brain and panic I've gone completely blank!

The Silver Sword - Ian Serrailier?
The Incredible Journey - don't know author but it's the one about a cat and 2 dogs who travel across Canada to their owner's home?
Chapters in Harry Potter where they travel - to Hogwarts/in the forest/to London?

Underground to Canada by Barbara Smucker ( I think) is great, a true story all about black child slaves from the US being smuggled over the border into Canada with some exciting bits and sad bits. It is often used as a year 7 reader so might be a bit advanced but perhaps some selected highlights?

I Am David by Anne Holm.

Is a hell of a journey, incredibly moving; last bit makes me howl every time.

i second i am david and silver sword 0 2 of my favourite war time children's books

what about carrie's war - not 'about' a journey but it does have travel and 'metaphorical' journeys in it...

Thanks everyone, lesson went well, used a mixture of Harry Potter and Kensuke's Kingdom in the end as these were two I could lay my hands on easily! Thanks for all suggestions though
