Please help me find a gripping crime novel

If I like:
Mark Billingham
Peter James
Tana French
Rachel Abbott
Val McDermid
Stuart McBride
Lee Child

Never been able to get through an Ian Rankin book, though. Can you please help me find another author? I only listen to audiobooks and much prefer an narrator to be from our side of the water than an American narrator.

Im going round in circles looking for the next listen but nothings grabbing my attention!

I like Nicci French's crime thriller novels. There's lots of stand-alones and an 8 part series (Frieda Klein). All really good on audiobook (English narrator).

Also, Cara Hunter's DI Adam Fawley series. Set in Oxford, really good narrators.

Pimpleonanelephant · 03/10/2021 18:07

Thanks! I’ll have a look at those.

Peter May - start with the Lewis trilogy
Mark Edwards - The Magpies
BP Walter - The dinner guest
Sharon Boulton - The pact
Lisa Gardner's books - most recent is Catch Me
John Marr - What lies between us

Enjoy!

Cormoran Strike séries, by Robert Galbraith are fab-great crime plot and characterisation. Ann Cleeves’ Vera books and Shetland books are good too.

trama · 03/10/2021 18:33

Yes to the Strike books. They're long but excellent.

rocksteadyfreddy · 03/10/2021 18:40

Have you tried Mo Hayder? A lot more graphic than the ones you've mentioned but amazing writing, and all set around Bristol.

rocksteadyfreddy · 03/10/2021 18:42

I also really like Lynda La Plante.

hiredandsqueak · 03/10/2021 18:44

Currently making my way through Joy Ellis' Jackman and Evans series and can recommend.
Graham Masterton the Katie Maguire series
Reginald Hill Dalziell and Pascoe
Helen H Durrant Calladine and Bayliss
Damien Boyd DI Nick Dixon
Tim Weaver David Raker
Peter Robinson Inspector Banks
Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway
All series I've read and enjoyed.

SuperStarRose · 03/10/2021 18:46

I've been enjoying Ruth Rendel on Audible recently. Although they can be quite hit and miss. The reviews are quite helpful in my decision making. She's written so many so you can follow the change in her style and those set in the 60's are quite Shock because of course we have moved on since nice then.

HerBigChance · 03/10/2021 19:04

I really enjoyed Anthony Horowitz - Magpie Murders.

shinynewapple21 · 03/10/2021 19:25

Currently reading Anne Cleeves Vera series .
Pagemarking for suggestions for when I've finished .

shinynewapple21 · 03/10/2021 19:26

I enjoyed the Cormoran Strike books but couldn't say how they would be on audio .

Kazplus2 · 03/10/2021 19:30

Karen Slaughter books are worth a look. Read s few and not been disappointed so far.

Pimpleonanelephant · 03/10/2021 19:32

Loved the Strike books, should have mentioned I’d listened to them too.

Hopefully I can find something from the suggestions - thank you all!

I’ve felt a bit lost as I usually always have a book for on the go but for some reason haven’t been able to choose one. Lots going on at work and home and I use my books to switch off or distract me so it’s great I’ll have this list to come back to. Thank you x

Although to add to that, the Karen Slaughter books I've listened to were narrated by a female American but I still found them very good. I have read the first two Cormoron Strike books and they were both good. Will buy more on audible from both authors.

feellikeanalien · 03/10/2021 19:37

I really enjoy Alex Gray. A series set in Glasgow with DI Lorimer.

I also like the Elly Griffiths Ruth Galloway series and the Shetland books.

Also Peter May, the Lewis trilogy as another pp suggested and also his Enzo Mcleod books.

Scoobydooobydooooo · 03/10/2021 19:40

If you have Audible, all of Ruth Rendell's books are on Audible Unlimited for free.

stillcrazyafterall · 03/10/2021 19:40

Definitely Harlen Coben and Robert Crais. Love them both, Crais just pips it for me though.

GiantCheeseMonster · 03/10/2021 19:42

I love Susan Hill’s Simon Serrailer novels. They’re on Audible (and BorrowBox) - the first one is The Various Haunts of Men.

I second this, especially the Frieda Klein series, didn't want them to end
Gindrinker43 · 03/10/2021 19:46

Definitely the Peter May trilogy set on Lewis and Harris.
Try something different with the Bryant and May series by Christopher Fowler of the Rivers of London series by Ben Aaronovitch

FatPatsCat · 03/10/2021 19:59

I enjoy all of Lisa Jewell's books

burningfromtheinside · 03/10/2021 20:22

Literally just finished Lisa Jewell's 'The Night She Disappeared' on Audible not sure if it falls into Crime as much as the others mentioned but it kept me on tenderhooks all the way through, I've found that with other books of hers too. The narrator was Joanne Froggatt. I've listened another two books she narrated which were also riveting Silent Child & Stolen Girl, both by Sarah A. Denzil

CinnamonSweet73 · 03/10/2021 23:43

Jane Casey's Maeve Kerrigan books, though it takes a couple before they get really good!

Gigi789 · 04/10/2021 00:25

I can recommend Michael Robothom. I’ve enjoyed them all.
