AIBU to have had a gut full of "psychological thrillers"

Having just read yet another one with a totally ridiculous and implausible ending, I don't think I can take any more. One of my favourite authors has a kindle book at £0.00 on offer at Amazon and I don't think I can even be bothered to download it.

I think "psychological thrillers" is just another name for chick-lit, and it does amuse me to read all the redacted reviews (back-slapping and puff pieces) from other authors of the same genre eg:

"The most gripping read of 2021"
" I could not put this book down!" fast enough
" Twisty and keeps you guessing through to the end".

I can't believe these other authors really have the time and inclination to read all this similar stuff being churned out in droves. About 15 years ago, this type of book was a novelty and tightly plotted and well-written. But since then, what has happened, why is the world suddenly being taken over with this genre of books?

Agreed; it must be truly soul destroying to have your work judged so publicly.
Part of the game I suppose. It certainly must be tough to have to read one star reviews for something you've sweated over, but if you receive more bad reviews than good it tells you something important about your book and if you receive more glowing reviews than scathing you just need to accept that no book is going to be for everyone. Worst thing of all is to receive no reviews whatsoever on Amazon.

Hey I'm honoured if any authors out there have responded to my post! Could I invite you to do an "I'm an author, AMA" thread on MN?

Also as an author what draws you to MN? Is it so that you can see what people are saying and discussing about books? Or is that the threads are potentially rich in subject fodder for novels as I think they would be, for sure.

I am an author of a psychological suspense novel/domestic thriller and I spent a lot of time on MN because it's fascinating - people are so honest when they are anonymous and you can also see the topics that really fire people up and know that they will make great fiction.

I agree with the two posters who mentioned "The Maidens" bought that full of expectations that it would be good, but very disappointing.

On the other hand Lisa Jewell's latest I really liked, similarly I'm enjoying much of Louise Candlish's books.

For the life of me I can't understand the appeal of The Thursday Murder Club, it's seems to have topped the book charts since around Christmas time. I thought it massively over hyped, for such a mediocre offering.

Yes I suppose that’s true - I don’t think there’s one book on good reads with only 4/5 star reviews. Even books I think are amazing will have 1 star reviews.

I agree an author ama would be really cool. I’d love to find out whether authors use their reviews or if it affects their work and lots of other things.

OP, with your "AIBU,' are you seriously asking whether it's acceptable to have reading preferences?

StealthPolarBear · 11/09/2021 10:25

I'm guessing it was just a way to set up a light-hearted, chatty thread. Which I for one was enjoying.

No, I'm saying I've had enough of reading this particular genre. I'm open to and welcome anyone's views on this.

OP I completely agree with you.
I've had my fill now.

They've become too formulaic for me and lack any depth or substance.

For me, it was a phase that I enjoyed at the time (probably over last 5ish years).
