Can anyone recommend any books set in Texas please? Fiction and non-fiction. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

TIA

I really enjoyed Annie Proulx 'That Old Ace In The Hole' - it's about a youngish guy that gets sent to the Texas panhandle on business and comes to love it. I remember it as both funny and gentle. Annie Proulx is a great writer.

Or Cormac Mccarthy No Country For Old Men. If you like more of a mob violence kind of thing!

Mary Karr, 'Cherry' and 'The Liars Club'. Two of my favourite non fiction books set in texas, although they're quite old now so may not be in print any more.

Can’t believe I forgot:
Map of Home by Randa Jarrar

I LOVED Cherry. I bet you can still find it in a second hand shop or on Amazon marketplace.

Vernon God Little. Not everyone's cup of tea.

BarefootHippieChick · 31/08/2021 19:37

Actually, I just checked Amazon and they're both still available!

percypig · 31/08/2021 19:39

I haven’t read it yet, but Olympus, Texas is highly recommended.

Friday Night Lights by H G Bissinger, about small-town high school football rivalries in rural Texas. Non-fiction, and quite old now, but I loved the insight into the whole thing.
Good thread, I love Texas (visited a few times) so will follow up on the other recommendations too.

Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry. It's about a couple of Texas Rangers and is really gripping and long enough to really get your teeth into. Quite violent in places, but I really enjoyed it after somebody on here recommended it.

I enjoyed Vernon God Little, but can remember very little about it.

Borridge · 31/08/2021 19:57

The wonderful “Lonesome Dove” by Larry McMurtry.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/08/2021 20:00

If you don't mind a children's book, Holes by Louis Sachar is rather great!

TangledTrees · 31/08/2021 20:00

Isaac’s Storm by Erik Larson. It’s about the great storm of Galveston in 1900

Equalpayquery · 31/08/2021 20:02

I really enjoyed Stephen King’s 11/22/63 - alternate history about JFK shooting but set in Texas and good.

LadyWithLapdog · 31/08/2021 20:05

Black-Eyed Susans

AsThePageTurns · 01/09/2021 20:05

Thank you all so much. There's more than I expected. I'm excited to read them.

Galveston by Nic Pizzolato. It's probably only a novella. I enjoyed it very much.

Star555 · 01/09/2021 20:33

@AsThePageTurns - Canyons by Gary Paulsen is one of my favourites set in Texas. Great for teenagers and adults alike. Wonderful plot that links modern-ish times and Native Americans centuries ago with an eerie time/place connection, vivid history and adventure -- a really touching and rewarding read.

MsAmerica · 02/09/2021 01:05

Why?

But Larry McMurtry, of course.

I particularly love two of his less-known books: Moving On and All My Friends Are Going To Be Strangers.

elkiedee · 02/09/2021 01:55

Most of Attica Lccke's novels are set in Texas.

Rick Riordan is much better known for his books for kids and teenagers, many based on Greek myths etc, eg the Percy Jackson books. But before that he wrote a series about Tres Navarre, an English lecturer turned PI in San Antonio.

The first book of Robert A. Caro's biography of Lyndon Baines Johnson is all about his youth and early political career in Texts. The Path to Power i think.
