Autumn Reads

What is everyone planning on reading this Autumn? Need to bridge the gap between summer reads and Christmas magazines!
Maybe something a bit spooky around Halloween? But open to all ideas

I haven't read Hamnet yet so that's next for me. Was also looking at a book of short stories by Daphne du Maurier.

I don't really do seasonal reads much but if you're looking for those:
Ali Smith, Autumn - I read and enjoyed this around the time when it first came out but now want to read the quartet and might try to reread it some time within the next few months. As I normally have several books on the go and have a lot of books out of the library which are relatively new and therefore in demand, it may well be Winter when I get to #2.

If you want lighter reading, Milly Johnson has 4 seasons books, though I'm not sure if there is a link apart from the titles, recurring characters etc, or whether order matters. I think the first book might be spring or summer though.

You could read books with a school/college setting for September, fantasy and witchcraft for Halloween and there must be books with a Guy Fawkes/bonfire etc plotline for November.

On witchcraft

I really enjoyed The Once and Future Witches by Alix E Harrow, set in an alternate history but perhaps with things in common with the real late 19th century New England, as 3 sisters who have escaped from their abusive father at different times find that they still have to fight battles against misogyny, exploitation, evil bosses, racism, and hostility to witches in the city.

Or maybe The Worst Witch series by Jill Murphy, who has sadly died this month.

Thanks for the recommendations, both. Had forgotten about Hamnet! Really want to read it. Will look up the others suggested too, thanks.

What about the Chocolat quartet by Joanne Harris? There's a lot of magical realism & witchcraft woven into the novels.

Or the Practical Magic novels by Alice Hoffman, which I haven't read yet but plan to this Autumn.

Great ones, thanks!

I liked The Halloween Tree by Ray Bradbury.

The Historian, bit too long and quite flowery language, but on the whole great story and atmosphere.

If you haven't read it and you like early 20th century, Elizabeth in her German Garden by Elizabeth con Arnim is great! Also Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons.
