Recommendations for ghost stories pl

I enjoy ghost stories and have read a fair few over the years but can't seem to find any new ones recently. I don't like horror but those sort of stories that are chilling, spooky and with that claustrophobic, creeping feeling of unease. Any recommendations gratefully received!

MR James is your man!

I'm enjoying A Stitch In Time by Kelley Armstrong at the moment but I'm not sure it'll be spooky enough for you. I'm a bit feeble when it comes to ghost stories. I'm only reading this because I've loved the rest of her stuff.

99p on Kindle currently.

Thank you but I've read all of them!

House on cold hill and sweetheart by Peter James.

SquitMcJit · 23/08/2021 21:20

E F Benson, if you like MR James

Snapdragon how funny, that was literally the last book I read! I finished it last week! I really enjoyed it. I like Nicola Cornick.

MR James,
EF Benson,
Edith Wharton,
E Nesbit,
The Virago Book of Ghost Stories,
The Virago Book of Ghost Stories Volume II,
The Virago Book of Victorian Ghost Stories,
Susan Hill.

I have the same taste in ghost stories as you, OP. A creeping sensation of unease is much more unsettling than a parade of gruesome horrors.

Yes!

The Wordsworth series “ Takes of Mystery and Imagination” are good and a bargain. They have some well known authors but some more unusual Victorian/Edwardian writers too.

gwilt · 23/08/2021 23:18

Instead, what about Shirley Jackson?

You could try The Lottery to see if you like her style.

The Haunting of Hill House is a classic.

GiantCheeseMonster · 23/08/2021 23:22

The Loney and StarveAcre by Andrew Michael Hurley.
The Little Stranger, Sarah Waters.

Effybriest · 24/08/2021 04:26

I listened to Starveacre as an audiobook and although enjoyed it found it weird and unsettling.
The Ritual by Adam Neville (sp ?) and also The Reddening, occult thriller about an archaeologist I think, (not started it yet but supposed to be good).
The whisper man by Alex North, more spooky thriller than ghost story but there is a supernatural element to it.

TheUnexpectedPickle · 24/08/2021 04:32

Dark Matter and Thin Air, both by Michelle Paver. Creepy, atmospheric and unsettling with no full on horror.

Cocogreen · 24/08/2021 05:24

Michelle Paver - Dark Matter, Thin Air and Wakenhyrst. I loved them, so spooky.

Cocogreen · 24/08/2021 05:25

Great minds!

SquitMcJit · 24/08/2021 09:31

Oh yes, Andrew Michael Hurley is brilliant - very unsettling. My favourite was The Devil’s Day.

GoodMorrowFairMaiden · 24/08/2021 09:35

This House is Haunted by John Boyne

Bbq1 · 24/08/2021 10:57

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I am going to start looking for some of them today.

Have you read J. b. priestly? He wrote both script and novels. Not scary but quite chilling and thought provoking. 'Inspector calls' is probably his most famous work, but his lesser known plays are worth a read.

Saucery · 24/08/2021 11:11

The Last Days Of Jack Sparks by Jason Arnott. His short stories are creepy too. Don’t bother with Ghoster, it’s garbled crap.
Water Shall Refuse Them, by Lucie McKnight Hardy.
Wylding Hall, by Elizabeth Hand.
This Dreaming Isle, ed. Dan Coxon. Brilliant collection of short stories by writers such as Ramsey Campbell, Andrew Michael Hurley etc.
Short stories by Simon Kurt Unsworth.

Bbq1 · 24/08/2021 11:12

I've bith read and seen An Inspector Calls. Yes, thinking about it that is a very weird story and feels quite menacing and chilling, especially the ending. I will try some of his lesser known material.

Also, The Apparition Phase, by Will Maclean. For those of us who grew up with 70s tv and Ghostwatch it’s a trip down memory lane Grin

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 24/08/2021 18:23

Darcey Coates has lots of giving stories. I love them !

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 24/08/2021 18:23

Obviously. I meant ghost instead of giving

Dontslamit · 27/08/2021 17:44

Turn of the screw ( Henry James)
The woman in Black ( Susan Hill)

Starve Acre for the last line …. No peeking!
