Can anyone recommend some interesting books about the history of Venice or fiction set in Venice? Thanks.

They may be a bit dated but Francesco da Mosto, who lives in Venice, did a tv series about Venice for the BBC and wrote books about Venice & Italy in general.

GlubGlubGlub · 27/07/2021 15:29

The Man in the Picture by Susan Hill.

Also as pp said Francesco da Mosto’s books about Venetian history.

I spent a month in Venice several years ago and read everything I could get my hands on. The month happened to be November, which might have coloured my mood and view, but I absolutely fell in love with Watermark, by the Russian (and later US/American) poet Joseph Brodsky. Brodsky spent winters in Venice for much of his adult life. He died in the mid-1990s and is buried in Venice (Isola di San Michele).

Thank you!!

Did you ever see this programme? Well worth watching, if you are missing Venice! 😀

Serenissima21 · 29/07/2021 07:41

Thanks again! I am actually in Venice at the moment (well technically I am on the train speeding out of Venice 😪) and it has whetted my appetite to find out more!

John Julius Norwich's A History of Venice
Jan Morris - Venice
Deborah Howard - The Architectural History of Venice

If you're brave: Daphne du Maurier's Don't Look Now (and the Nicholas Roeg film adaptation) or Ian McEwan's The Comfort of Strangers (there is also a (not very pleasant) film adaptation of this).

Lucky you! Looks like a beautiful day in Venice. www.skylinewebcams.com/en/webcam/italia/veneto/venezia/piazza-san-marco.html
I’d recommend the Polly Coles book as a light, interesting Kindle read for the train, about a year she spent in Venice with her family.

This is a bit different: https://commapress.co.uk/books/the-book-of-venice

Short stories about Venetians and the impact of tourism.

ZittiEBuoni · 29/07/2021 13:52

I second Judith Mackrell's The Unfinished Palazzo.

Also Henry James The Aspern Papers.

Venice is a Fish by Tiziano Scarpa is a quirky guide to Venetian history and culture.

I've also enjoyed Philip Gwynne Jones's light detective fiction set in Venice.

Tracy Chevalier’s next novel is set in 18th century Venice - one to look out for. 😀
