Just listened to Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir (author of the Martian) with my family on a long road trip and it was amazing - we were all so over invested.
It's the first adult book we've listened to together, does anyone have any recommendations they have enjoyed with similar aged children? Not sure I can face any more middle grade books after that (I'm looking at you, Mysterious Benedict Society, urgh)

We accidentally listened to a radio adaptation of Frankenstein on a long Halloween car journey once when 2 of mine were that age, and they loved it. But if that's a bit too scary, Terry Pratchett books are good.

Ooh that could work, don't think it would be too scary. I wonder what the audiobook version is like.

Unfortunately none of us like Terry Pratchett (I've tried loads of times, and the rest of them aren't fan either)

Agatha Christie? Hitchhiker's Guide? I've also listened to a few classics in the car with the kids - Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Great Expectations.

Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy
Roald Dahl's autobiography - actually a really good listen
The mighty boosh (less rude than the TV show)
Lord of the Rings

We used to enjoy gentle detective stuff like Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot on our car journeys.

We used to listen to Sherlock Holmes (I can practically recite The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Speckled Band), PG Wodehouse, Agatha Christie, Jerome K Jerome, various ghost stories, history (This Sceptered Isle for example), Hitchhikers Guide, Gerald Durrell, Adrian Mole, Rumpole, etc.

These days you can probably find podcasts related to their special interests, or the place you are going (eg ghosts of Scotland, famous sinkholes of California etc).

Not a book but the radio comedy series Cabin Pressure by John Finnamore is an absolute gem to listen to as a family. It's a complete story with each episode titled after a destination, starting with Abu Dhabi and finishing with Zurich (parts 1 and 2). I defy you not to love Martin, Douglas, Carolyn and of course Arthur by the end.

We have also all enjoyed Elvenquest, a spoof on the LoTR and other similar quest based adventures. It's silly, escapist and very funny with some memorable characters.

Thanks will check some of these out!
I'm not keen on detective novels/Agatha Christie etc and don't think the rest of them are either
I think they've read hitchhiker's or watched the terrible TV version or something. They are certainly always quoting it at any rate!

We have also had the Wizard of Earthsea that DH loved and a series of Tintin ones a few years ago that drove me up the wall
