A book haul and where to start?

I got these in two charity shops today. I've been trying not to buy books as I have so many on Kindle to get through but at 3 for £1, I couldn't resist.

I haven't ready any of these. Are there any that you'd particularly recommend? I'm the world's most indecisive person, at least I think I am, so any opinions on where to begin would be helpful.

TIA and apologies for the bad pics.

I've made a list of the books because of the terrible pics and if anyone is visually impaired.

They are

Beloved by Toni Morrison
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey
The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett
I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron
Mindhunter by John Douglas & Mark Olshaker
Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks
All At Sea by Decca Aitkenhead
Maeve's Times by Maeve Binchy
The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck
The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton
The Cabaret of Plants by Richard Mabey
The Disappearing Spoon by Sam Kean

The only one of those that I've read is the seven deaths of Evelyn hardcastle and it was really good.

I’d go for Maeve Binchy if I wanted a nice cosy read for the weekend. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest if I felt like more of a challenge - I’ve not read it (exists in paperback on my shelf) but I’ve seen the film and I need to pick the right moment to read it.

StColumbofNavron · 19/06/2021 20:26

Actually didn’t see Beloved and also the one by Pearl S Buck.

I am definitely not helpful.

flightofthecrow · 19/06/2021 20:28

I would go for the disappearing spoon. ...just based on the title! need to read the blurb

UnalliterativeGeorge · 19/06/2021 20:30

Seven deaths of Evelyn hardcastle and one flew over the cuckoo's nest get first votes here!

hanahsaunt · 19/06/2021 20:34

I absolutely hated The Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle - it was utterly tedious and is one of the very few books that I haven't finished (I read about a third before giving up). I would start with Toni Morrison who is outstanding.

myfuckingfreezer · 19/06/2021 20:42

I loved Seven Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle but you have to get passed the first chunk. It's hard to keep it in you head at first. But then you really get invested!

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest = a work of genius.

Year of Wonders is good.
The Seven Deaths of Evelyn H, I didn't like
Didn't like I Feel Bad About My Neck much either
I've read Beloved, but so long ago that I can't remember much. I did enjoy it.

TheWindOnTheMoon · 21/06/2021 08:33

I liked the Nora Ephron - I Feel Bad about my Neck. Her writing is a bit hit & miss for me but this one was quite good.

I enjoyed All at Sea by Decca Aitkenhead but it is very sad.

Didn't get on with the umpteen lives of Evelyn thingy. Found it confusing.

Maeve Binchy - have enjoyed her books in the past. She was a good writer.

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 21/06/2021 10:10

The Thin Man is classic crime noir. Hammett is a terrific writer - that would be my pick.

RickiTarr · 21/06/2021 10:14

I feel bad about my neck made me laugh. I’d start there if you need some jollity.

Mindhunter is interesting, but dark.
The Decca Aitken one is good but very sad.
The Thin man excellent. All of his are.
One Flew over the Cuckoo’s nest, brilliant but scary.
