I'm addicted to my phone. I used to read loads but over last few years I've become stuck to my phone instead.

My concentration is so frazzled that anything I read needs to be accessible- I'm not about to start working my way through Booker short list.

In general I like plot and page turners. Really enjoyed Stephen King non-horror.

Would appreciate crime or thriller recommendations- but no violence against children.

Books I like:
Decent YA - especially Dystopian. Not into fantasy YA but think I'd enjoy most other YA if well written.

Also like adult dystopia and don't mind a zombie or two

However, I am not particularly committed to any genre - just needs to be readable with plot. The only thing I won't really read is romance.

Thanks in advance

I am pilgrim. OMG it is a thick book but unputdownable. My favourite ever book so far and I read A LOT. Love the Sue Grafton books A is for Alibi etc.

I am pilgrim is amazing!

Metro 2033 for a bit of end of the world dystopia

American Dirt - well worth a read.

A book of secrets by Kate Morrison was my favourite lockdown read!

Sam bourne books are good too if you like action /thriller stuff.

I know just what you mean about the phone. I used to be such a bookworm but find myself turning to the phone these days instead. I have to put it in another room, make myself pick up a book and then I can enjoy reading but it's much harder to lose myself in a book compared with a few years ago.

For YA, I'd recommend Patrick Ness (I loved the Chaos walking trilogy) and Anthony Horowitz. I like AH's children's books (especially the Alex Rider books - real page turners), YA fiction (Power of 5 series) and adult books (magpie murders and sequel, Daniel Hawthorne books, House of Silk and Moriarty).

Terry Pratchett's Discworld books are great page turners even if you don't usually like fantasy. Depending on the book, you get satire, humour and crime (or sometimes all 3). Just don't start at the beginning - I think it took him a few books to get into his stride.

Kate Atkinson is an author who writes really well but is also accessible and values plot.

I'd recommend Chris Brookmyre for crime.

Before & After by Andrew Shanahan - dystopian and I really cared about the character.
I've been dying to recommend it to someone.

Think I'm the only person in the world who doesn't get or like Terry Pratchett. I really want to....but just doesnt float my boat

Dystopian but not fantasy really - very nature oriented in fact “The Wall” by Marlen Haushofer

It will gently grip you from the start, it will surprise you, then it will give you own spoiler and when you get near the end, you will want to go over the beginning searching for the even bigger spoiler that you have missed.

And all set in the woods and peppered with wisdoms over our life as a human race, children and hands . . :)

Hi OP. I can't help with dystopian novels, but a thriller author I really enjoy is Heidi Perks. I found her books very engaging.

The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham.
Not a very long book, so not daunting as you get back into reading.

The Day of the Triffids by John Wyndham. I absolutely love that book.

Dystopian - adult: Sheri S Tepper.
Crime: JD Robb, Tess Gerritsen, Kathy Reichs, Sue Grafton, SR Garrae, Janet Evanovich, Alex Gray, Ann Cleeves, Robert Galbraith (aka JK Rowling), Richard Castle, Ben Aaronovitch (supernatural), Elizabeth Peters, some Kelley Armstrong, Kerry Greenwood, LJ Ross, Ruth Dudley Edwards.
Thrillers: David Baldacci
Other fun stuff: Lois McMaster Bujold, Jodi Taylor.

Would highly recommend Fifty Fifty by Steve Cavanagh. Just finished it, it's a crime thriller about two sisters blaming each other for the death of their father. Im not that bothered by thrillers generally but this was crime based and a lot of it based on the court case. Very pacey and makes you want to pick it up to see what happens next.

I think the genres of books I like may be a bit different, but books I've found hard to put down:

Life After Life (Kate Atkinson)
Any Human Heart (William Boyd)
Three Hours (Rosamund Lipton)

And recently I've really enjoyed American Dirt (seriously couldn't put down), and Rodham (Curtis Sittenfeld)

EmmaStone · 08/06/2021 13:43

Oh and I really enjoyed The Girls by Emma Cline if you know anything about the Manson family.

Standrewsschool · 08/06/2021 23:07

The Wall - John Lanchaster

Margaret’s Ark - Daniel Keohane

Three Hours

I've just finished "The Girl I Used to Be" by Mary Torjussen. Was a really engaging read and it's written by a Mumsnetter! @MeantToBeWriting
