Just finished The Starless Sea. Don’t want to start another book

I always have a good on the go. But I have just finished The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern and I am still invested in that story and don’t want to part with it just yet.

I loved the story and the characters and how they interwove with the past and future. I’m sure I missed lots of the subtleties so am looking forward to reading it again but I do need another book or 2 in the meantime.

Have you read the Starless Sea? What books have really gripped you that you didn’t want to end?

I got through the entire series of the st Mary’s chronicles books. My life was awful after. Felt like I was grieving.

VorpalSword · 04/06/2021 18:25

I have listened to a few of these on Audible. A series the characters almost become friends and you miss them when they have gone.

Have you read Night Circus by the same author OP?

I've not read Starless Sea but I felt exactly the same as you did once I'd finished it! I absolutely love Night Circus and I've read it 3 or 4 times now.

I'm putting Starless Sea on my kindle list after your recommendation.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 04/06/2021 18:33

I LOVED The Night Circus so will look out for this one too

Zampa · 04/06/2021 18:36

God, I hated The Starless Sea (but loved The Night Circus).

Have you tried The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton or The Binding by Bridget Collins?

VorpalSword · 04/06/2021 19:06

I also loved The Night Circus and every so often googled the author to see if she has written anything else. I am planning on rereading The Night Circus soon (recently moved so most books still in boxes!)

@Zampa what about it didn’t you like?

All The Light We Cannot See was like that for me. I wasn't convinced at first but I couldn't put it down.

Have added Starless Sea to my wish list!

Where the Crawdads Sing is the most beautiful book, listened to it on Audible and the narrator is excellent too.

Zampa · 04/06/2021 21:42

@VorpalSword

I enjoyed the first half/two thirds but didn't get the fantastic talking bee, ship bits. Perfectly willing to admit that I possibly just didn't understand it!

It is a suspend disbelief book, and if you can’t, because something jars or you just don’t feel it, then the book will fall flat for you.

The Starless Sea is my all time favourite book I think. When I finished it I honestly thought that nothing would ever come close to it. I read The Night Circus years ago and loved it, so that's definitely a good suggestion, as is The Miniaturist.
I will try to think of more

Deadringer · 07/06/2021 11:57

I just downloaded The Starless Sea because of this thread. I really liked 'The Miniaturist', and loved 'All the light you cannot see', it's one of my all time favourite reads. I enjoyed Crawdads, though i am not sure it deserved all the praise that was heaped on it.

Bluesheep8 · 07/06/2021 12:12

Have a look at The Wonder by Emma Donoghue op...that might fill the void left by The Starless Sea

mimbleandlittlemy · 07/06/2021 18:06

Piranesi might fill the hole - I loved Night Circus, didn't love Starless Sea at all but Piranesi has a similar other worldliness to it.

bewitchingnight · 07/06/2021 18:15

Oh I loved The Starless Sea so much. Had such a book hangover afterwards. I would recommend Once Upon a River by Diane Setterfield, The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by Victoria Schwab and Piranesi by Susanna Clarke.

VorpalSword · 07/06/2021 20:27

Love the expression book hangover.

I am going for a palette cleaner with a Terry Pratchett and will then look up the books mentioned.

I loved both of the Erin Morgensten books but couldn't get into All the Light We Cannot See although I tried once or twice.

I'm also waiting somewhat impatiently for Piranesi to be available in paperback.

Others I would put in a similar category are Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman and Beauty and Spindle's End both by Robin McKinley.

yoshiblue · 08/06/2021 07:32

My Brilliant Friend Quartet did it for me. I was grieving the end of the last book Story of the Lost Child. I also loved AllThe Light We Cannot See too.

Thanks for the recommendation above OP, off to add to my list.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 08/06/2021 07:48

I loved The Night Circus but wasn't as gripped by Starless Sea.

I felt that way about The Watchmaker of Filigree Street, which is similar-ish in style, and absolutely wonderful. It has a follow up - The Lost Future of Pepperharrow - and another one set in the same universe but different characters, The Bedlam Stacks. Author is Natasha Pulley, and she's a genius, quite frankly.

RedLipsAndRosyCheeks · 15/06/2021 18:26

Have you read The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson OP?

That is a brilliant book.
