The Artist's Way

Hi
Has anyone read this? I know there are versions, including one aimed at retired people, which is probably the same but me and my dad could share.

The reviews on Amazon and the first chapter suggest a lot of god references, which aren't suitable.

Interested in opinions generally, it seems quite marmite. Any suggestions for books about creativity would be welcome. Thank you.

Hopeful bump

The Artist’s Way is Christian. If you’re not Christian it’s probably not the right book for you. The author says that you don’t have to believe in God, but, unless your extremely open to that idea, I would advise against it, really.

Thanks
I have heard good things about it by people who didn't say a word about the god factor - but unlike me and my family, they will just spend a tenner on a book without needing to think.

I noticed there's no 1p copies floating about which is often a sign a book is good. But if it's dominated by religion, I will probably find an alternative.

If you can cope with chapters about ‘Forming a Sacred Circle’ and ‘The Artist’s Prayer’ and are ok with stuff like affirmations and the idea of aligning yourself with the creative power of the universe, then you might like it. I’m definitely not its intended audience.

Have a look at the free preview on Amazon. I think that gives a good flavour of what the book is like.

It’s not so much dominated by “religion” per se, it’s more a general idea that creativity flows from a source that needs to be tapped into-and the book calls that source “God”. A lot of creativity guides have themes like that baked into them. It probably comes from the way that a lot of people who create great things feel like the inspiration came from outside of them, rather than within, iyswim. They feel guided by a higher power and want other people to experience that too. This could be off putting if your mind doesn’t work like that.

My neighbour bought us a copy each but we’re both struggling to absorb ourselves. The references to God are off putting at first but I like @JeannieTheZebra’s way of expressing it above. That’s helpful, so I might pick it up again soon

Thanks all

The free preview looks quite good. I don't want to find myself wading through stuff about god.

Any ideas for alternative books that have helped?

What is it you want the book to do, OP? Or what do you want to do or produce as a result of reading it?

Ostara212 · 01/06/2021 12:09

Dad and I both are trying to do some creative projects. sometimes a good book is a real anchor for a goal.

We both might want to make a side hustle out of it.

Well, it depends on what you actually want to do. It’s more a general ‘unleashing creativity’ guide than anything that’s going to be a concrete help to get you to write a complete, publishable novel or a play, say. (As you’re mentioning side hustles...)
