Whats the last book you read? and was it any good? What are you reading now?

Recently I have read

A Lick of Frost - Laurell K Hamilton
(very good, better than the last one or two in the Merry Gentry series, finally a few answers)

Kitty and the Midnight Hour, and Kitty goes to washington by Carrie Vaughn
(good fun, and very funny, about a werewolf named kitty that is also a radio dj)

I just started reading Halfway to The Grave by Jeaniene Frost about a half blood vampire

and next book on the pile is
Regeneration: Species Imperative #3 (Species Imperative) by Julie E. Czerneda
(A bit harder Sci-fi but an truely excellent writer my favorite novel of hers is A thousand Words for Stranger.

I like a bit of Laurell K. My sister has just bought A Lick of Frost, I'm hoping to pinch it off of her by the end of the weekend Do you read Anita Blake too?

I'm currently reading Dark Legend by Christine Feehan ('A Carpathian Novel') Another take on the Vampire legends, there's about 14 of them in the series so far so you can imagine there's nothing that spectacular or OMG about them, but they're a decent enough read (bit like a vampire Mills and Boon) I only ever get them out of the library though

serenity- yup have read all the anita blakes, obsideon butterfly was my favorite I think, the last one was good. I know of christeen feehan but don't think i have ever read any of her work. and serenity as in the movie? (firefly tv show) big fan of that series must get it on dvd sometime as already have the movie. the library here dosent have much in the way of horror and sci-fi, we just got back from visiting my parents in the states so bought and read books while there, and carted half a dozen back with me. Otherwise mostly trade at the derby market bookstall and use vouchers for xmas, b-day, mothersday whatever.

kerrymum- dont know John Connelly what has he written? whats the best in your opinion.

sfxmum · 18/11/2007 12:20

Laurel K is really soft porn I mean really not exactly scifi

Meridian · 18/11/2007 12:25

sfx- that would be a horror as in horror the titile of the thread.. and not all of her writing is.. and to be honest its no worse than the majority of romance novels, and most crappy modern throw away chick lit.. its not shakespear or proust, or some sob story about child abuse its just fun reading it shouldn't be painful to get through a book.

OP posts:
sfxmum · 18/11/2007 12:34

didn't say it wasn't fun, don't really think it is horror either

John Twelve Hawks The Traveller was something I really enjoyed last summer and this summer the 2nd part of the Fourth Realm Trilogy which is called The Dark River.

It's about astral travellers and their protectors called Harlequins.

An awful lot of consipiracy theory stuff and you might end up logging off the 'net for good - or living off the grid as he terms it.

Am already looking forward to the 3rd part!

laurliemonkey · 18/11/2007 17:09

world war z i loved- about the war on zombies, told through a series of interviews with survivors. its very moving (in a strange way) and if you like zombies its a fantastic, intelligent book.

my dh wants me to start the wheel of time series but it looks a bit elves and magic to me.

serenity · 18/11/2007 22:01

Oh I wouldn't call Laurel K horror either, but with vampires, zombies, witches and shapeshifters I think you could just about get away with calling it fantasy Fantasy erotica maybe

My sister bought the Frost book over this morning, and I've just finished it. Yes, definitely some actual plot in this one, I'm looking forward to the next!

Just about to start 'Voice of the Gods', book three in the Age of the Five series by Trudi Canavan. It's a pretty good series although I do prefer her previous ones, 'The Black Magician Trilogy'.

mistypeaks · 18/11/2007 22:12

OMG I'm so behind. The latest Merry Gentry is out?? Just going onto Amazon . . . I do like Laurel K. I tried reading the Brian Lumley Necromancer series once, but my head hurt. I'm a Dean Koontz fan too sometimes he's more sci-fi/supernatural/horror than other times. I read 1 Charmaine Harris and liked it, but was unsure as to what order the series was supposed to be in!! There's a really good vampire book called stainless by todd grimsom.

Meridian · 19/11/2007 11:07

laurliemonkey- i have seen world war z but never picked it up to look at it must remeber to have a proper look at it sometime.

serenity- i guess laurell k is in a catergory all her own, but her writing is good when she dosen't go so off tangent and the worlds she creates are very dark. I read the first two black magician but only halfway through the third before i put it down and got distracted by other things.

mistypeaks- I got frost while in the states a day after it hit the shelves and left it at my parents house, I should have brought it with me though and could of passed it on or sold it, but had too much crap in the suitcase to fit another book in.

anne bishop is another fav, I prefer the dark jewels book to the witches ones though all are good. went through a massive steven king phase when I was about 12 or 13, the Stand is still one of my favorite horror books of all time, though i think its a bit more complicated than just horror.

i read two amazing series by Trudi Canavan - the black magician trilogy was amazing and also soem series by Maggie Furey, the first book being called Auria (something like that, read them and would have to say i was gripped the whole way through) has anyone else read these?

laurliemonkey · 19/11/2007 14:40

on a related note, does anyone know which the best doctor who books are to read? thinking about dh's birthday

Meridian · 19/11/2007 22:21

bethoo- I read the first maggie furey one but i don't think I read the rest of the series will have to go dig through the book boxes under the bed.

laurlie-- never read doctor who books, never really thought about it to be honest but i only really started watching the new ones as the old ones were never really played in the US when i was growing up, except for that really crap movie version that bombed big time, but i didn't watch that either. hope someone gives you an idea

Bethoo - I read the Maggie Furey books. Started out brilliantly, but seemed to end all in a rush.

I'm currently reading Innocent Mage by Karen Miller which is pretty good.

Enjoyed the Black Magician trilogy, and looking forward to starting the new Trudi Canavan's.

Has anyone else read the Blue Sword etc. books by Robin McKinley - excellent!!

Harimad · 09/02/2008 22:50

Have now finished Innocent / Awakened Mage by Karen Miller. Good books with twists I didn't expect. Also didn't expect that it was just two books, since most fantasies seem to be trilogies or in fives...

What's everyone else reading now?

nooka · 09/02/2008 23:09

I've got the Awakened Mage mage on my bedside table, so I'm gald people think it's good (although "Gar" is an incredibly stupid name IMO) and also A Knight of the World (Terry Brooks) as I really liked the first volume. Am currently re-reading Song of Ice and Fire though, so it may be a little while before I get to them!

nooka · 09/02/2008 23:10

I like Robin McInley very much.

meridian · 10/02/2008 16:39

reading Ivy Cole and the Moon by gina farago at the moment with Working for the Devil (Dante Valentine, Book 1
by Lilith Saintcrow the next book on top of the pile.. its a very big pile

GeekBoy · 25/02/2008 16:03

Trashy, pulp sword and sorcery - James Barclay - Chronicles of the Raven

Sci-Fi - Peter F Hamilton - Nights Dawn Trilogy
Just finished The Dreaming Void by Hamilton as well - bloody marvellous but it's going to be years before I find out how the poxy thing ends!! (Lesson learned - never buy the first HUUUGE book in a trilogy until the third book is listed on Amazon)
