I have done all the books and the short stories. Even listened to the play about it ( didn’t enjoy that I have to say. )
Read the time police and the Elizabeth cage. Didn’t get on with the horse one.

Now I feel lost as to what to read next. Someone suggested River of London but I could get into it.

Any suggestions of something similar ?

I normally read thriller type books the more gory the better or police drama etc. So these were way out of my comfort zone. I did also enjoy His Dark materials and shadow and bone.

Have just bought Clovenhoof book 1, sounds good!

I have this in my wish list - sounds like it might be OK, anyone tried it?

You might enjoy My Dirty Little Book of Stolen Time by Liz Jensen. Years since I read it but I remember it being good fun.

Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 · 09/05/2021 18:34

@ChequerBoard. I have it to as well now. First few chapters done and enjoying it

Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 thank you! I’m pretty sure they’d stand a re read. Am blown over by the tightness of words and the humour.
Was super struggling to find books worth reading so this list is great. Also, I’m sure you have already, but the witch books by terry pratchett are brilliant too. Very well observed

Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 · 11/05/2021 18:59

@AuntieDolly thankyou do much for the clovenhoof suggestion. I am already on book two and they are just hysterical. They have filled the gap.

I did try the invisible library but didn’t get past five chapters before giving up. But pleased that these have many many books for me to listen to.

It took me a while to get into the Invisible Library but when I did I really enjoyed it. How about the Rotherweird series? I’ve also just started the Quantum Curators & the Faberge Egg and that’s ok so far.

Have you also read Jodi Taylor’s Time Police series too? There’s a bit of St Mary’s crossover in them.

I am reasonably certain that Jodi Taylor has read all the Lindsay Davies Falco books - the Dramatis Thingummy alone is very similar let alone the similar mix of serious and funny and some character types (albeit the Davies books are set in Ancient Rome). Might be worth giving those a go until we have more St Marys/Time Police.

ChessieFL · 13/05/2021 17:31

There is another Time Police book and also another Elizabeth Cage book later this year. Think one is August and one October but can’t remember which way round.

Try To Say Nothing Of The Dog by Connie Willis.

MillicentMargaretAmanda · 13/05/2021 23:06

Missing the point of the thread here, but there's a play???

Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 · 14/05/2021 15:38

Yup. On audible. They did a play version of the first book with lots of actors. I didn’t like it as they changed the story line. As an example while Max was training they were punching her in the stomach etc. And made st Mary’s seem like a horrible place to be instead of what the books make it feel like.

Also changed lots of the books Listened to half an hour and then turned off.

I have similar issues trying to get in to anything new after finishing St Mary's. There are three other series I rotate as the audio book narrations are so good.

  1. Is the Diary of River sing, if you like Dr who you'll love this. It's available on Big Finish, they produce all the Dr who universe audiobooks.
  1. Is the Adventures of Iris Wildthyme, also by big finish. Imagine Dr who was a middle aged, glam rock lady lush. It's a bit wacky but very funny.
  1. The Brenda & Effie series on audible (by Paul Magrs, who writes some of the Iris Wildthyme series) very funny and quite an unusual series but the narration is excellent. But make sure you look out for the long version by Joanna Tope and not the short stories.

All very different but all based on time travelling adventuresses. 😂

NotSoLongGoodbye · 19/05/2021 13:46

I struggled initially with the invisible library but it grew on me - it's very plot driven to the expense of character but it is good fun. I've just read 'A deadly education' by Naomi Novik and enjoyed it, even though its YA.

MrsBarnstable · 20/05/2021 09:35

Just to say thank you, I have now discovered St Mary's thanks to you all and am already on the second book
Something I'd never usually look at but is bloody brilliant

NewAndImprovedNorks · 25/05/2021 22:39

I am currently romping through St Mary’s on Audible (just about to start the 9th one) and I am already sad for when there aren’t any more.
I LOVE the Rivers of London, but then kobna holdbrook-smith could read a phone book to me and I would be happy.
Ones I go back to over and again are
The Number One Ladies’ Detective Agency
All of Terry Pratchett
Lord Peter Wimsey
All of Kate Atkinson

Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 · 26/05/2021 06:12

@MrsBarnstable and @NewAndImprovedNorks glad ur loving them. Don’t forget she has written two time police books so far. They cross over in places as well. But they are just as good.

I'm so into these too after these recommendations, I can't put the St Mary's books down, I get completely lost in them. It's been a long time since I enjoyed a book so much
Down loaded The Rivers of London too. Can't wait

Paranoidandroidmarvin1350 · 26/05/2021 08:11

I’m so pleased people have found them after these. They are simply fantastic

DilysPrice · 24/07/2021 00:21

Belatedly joining to second To Say Nothing Of The Dog by Connie Willis which is amazing.

Paranoidandroidmarvin · 24/07/2021 23:06

@Whymrsrobinson a thread on st Mary’s is never old!!!!! In my opinion Grin

Winenota · 28/07/2021 00:19

Am with you. Just read as many as I could..I love the way they are snappy and concise and assume you the reader can keep up. And so caring! And funny! And got me googling all sorts🤩 love!
Lockwood books by Jonathan Stroud ( kids books but superb) are similar in that they are close mates and get up to all sorts ( they are ghost hunters)
