Just wondering if there are any other mumsnetters who have either read these books or use the techniques mentioned in them. Have you found mind mapping and speed reading useful and if so, do you use still use it?

Hi metro baby - I did a speed reading course at school and it was the best thing I ever did. Great for work, but a pain on holiday when you end up taking 6 books with you. When you find out where they are, could you let me know. I did it when I was about 13 and it was great for that age group but I wouldn't mind doing it again as a refresher course....

I haven't found any courses in them but Tony Buzan has written a couple of books on the subject. I've got the speed reading book (but not read it yet apart from the intro), and at the end of the chapter there are exercises to do. buzan reckons each chapter takes approx 10 mins to complete and its up to you as to how many chapters you do in a day.

I'm hoping that once I master speed reading I'll be able to keep up with the amount of threads on MN

the course was good as they had a machine which covered up the page quicker and quicker, making you read faster, then they would test you on what you had understood or could remember. I'm not sure how you learn speed reading by reading a book... still good luck

I've recently purchased Speed Reading in a Week by Tina Konstant. She explains strategies designed to help you make full use of your reading time and to recall what you have read when you need it. A lot of what she says is common sense and I've started to incorporate elements of her suggestions.

I bought it because I'm having to read lots of technical stuff at the moment as part of my re-training at work. In particular, I noticed that I have to re-read things again and again, which is not an efficient use of my time as I only work 3 days a week.

I sometimes think that pregnancy has turned my brain into a sponge because, unlike pre-pregnancy, I'm not as efficient at retaining information. I'm hoping this book will help me out.

A company called Kestrel do a course in memory maps, in the south somewhere. The Scots, I read, are introducing the Buzan ideas into primary education, probably not a bad idea when you think about ~75% of the brain is used at primary level against ~40% now....as I remember!

I am a mad mind mapper. Freehand is OK, but what I love is using my Mindmanager software. I used it a lot when I worked, but even now I use it for planning stuff and even for todo lists.

I did speed reading course a few years ago and was quite good at it, but most of the reading I do now is for pleasure and I like to poor over the words and the sentences and speed reading just doesn't give me the satisfaction.
