Terry Pratchett for 13 year old DS?

I haven't read any and don't know where to start. I did pick one up that was lying around at home as a teen and couldn't get into it, but I'm thinking it wasn't one of the easy to get into ones, judging by posts I've read on here.

I don't know if they are too old for him?

He likes science fiction type of stuff, with humour, has finished the hitchhiker's guide. Any other recommendations are welcome!

The guards sequence would be good to start with. I think most 13 yr old are fine with T.P. if you tried his first couple of books, they really aren't as good as the others.

PaterPower · 02/04/2021 09:43

I’d say the opposite - it’s worth trying the first couple in the discworld series and then following the order they were written in. Otherwise you’ll lose a lot of the backstory of the characters.

Like many authors, he definitely improved with practice though.

There are also books (eg “Diggers”) that he wrote for a slightly younger audience which are all quite fun to read, even as an adult.

You could try starting with Mort which has a teenage boy as lead character, and also features DEATH who is one of the best characters. If he likes it then go on to Reaper Man, and then practically any of them really.

The Hogfather was my first, which is loosely based around Santa and includes the tooth fairy.

I agree Guards Guards is another one that my DS (14) has enjoyed.

My slightly younger DS (11) enjoyed The Last Hero.

Thanks everyone! I'm torn because I'm a start books in order person myself, but I know there's every chance DS will put them to one side if he isn't gripped straight away! And I think they'd be just his cup of tea if he got into them. Is reading them out of order a disaster?

The Wee Free Men series is good for kids that age. If you google terry Pratchett reading order there are images that map out different reading orders depending on what you want to follow.
I wouldn’t even advise adults to read Terry Pratchett in the order they came out- I tend to say start with whatever grabs you and go from there.

MrsWooster · 02/04/2021 17:12

Definitely not a disaster. I’m a Pratchett fiend and I still struggle with the first two-I like them because I read the rest, iyswim. Second the idea of starting with Mort then reading the Death Novels, then the City Watch novels -there’s a mad map somewhere that clumps them into ‘reading schemes’ -I’m sure someone will be along in a minute now the gnu has been sent up!!

MrsWooster · 02/04/2021 17:13

Also I am currently reading the wee free men with DS aged 10 and he’s smitten.

miffmufferedmoof · 02/04/2021 17:16

I just read Johnny and the Bomb, which is very different to discworld etc but I thought it was good. It's about a group of young teens in the 90s who time travel to and from 1942 (involves WW2)

FelicityBeedle · 02/04/2021 17:18

Start with Mort or Witches abroad, definitely the easiest to get into

QueenMabby · 02/04/2021 17:18

My DD loved wee free men about aged 10 - she read all of the Tiffany Aching “series” and really enjoyed them.

Ellmau · 03/04/2021 12:23

Start with Mort and then read in order.

Bromeliad · 03/04/2021 14:04

I started with his kids books at the time (the Bromeliad trilogy - truckers, diggers and wings and Johnny and the Dead, Johnny and the bomb and the third one I forget right now) I was probably moving onto discworld by 13 though. My first was The Hogfather too, allthough it's not very seasonal right now.

lazylinguist · 03/04/2021 14:12

I love them all, but my 13yo started with the Wee Free Men series, which is perfect for that age imo. They are a little bit more grown-up than children's books and are laugh-out-loud funny.

Apileofballyhoo · 04/04/2021 10:00

I've ordered Mort for him. Thanks very much to everyone who took the time to post. I'll update to let you know if he enjoyed it and has become a fan. Plenty of books to read if he does!
