Comics for girls

My DP bought our 6 year old the Beano last week and she liked it a lot but came to the conclusion that it was for boys and she wanted a girls comic. I can't see anything in the supermarket. We really don't want the magazines that come with plastic tat. She's looking for stories and comic strips. I used to get Bunty as a child but that's gone. Any ideas?

If she liked Beano why not continue with it and teach your daughter that there is no such thing as a boy or girl comic?

Its not aimed at either sex but both DS and DD really loved The Phoenix. Its not available in shops, only by subscription. The comic strips are fantastic and with the additional benefit of no plastic toy and no advertising inside.

Thanks. We'd be more than happy to continue it. But I see her point, it's about the antics of boys. She doesn't like boys, boys are smelly and loud. She's much more interested in girls and what they get up to. I'll definitely look at the Phoenix.

The Phoenix and the Beano are both great but both have predominantly male characters, I think you'll struggle to find something like Bunty or Mandy these days sadly, I certainly couldn't find a female focussed comic when my DDs were younger. If the female focussed comics had been replaced by comics with 50% female characters then you could say there were gender neutral comics but that hasn't happened, girls still are not seeing themselves in the majority of literature that they consume.

To be fair to The Beano they have increased the number and prominance of female characters but it's still not 50:50 and TBF that is probably hard to do in a comic that relies so much on its classic characters.

What a sad business that there are no girls comics. I loved Bunty. Can't believe there isn't even one left.

Kanaloa · 06/04/2021 00:38

Would a superhero comic work? If so, Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur is very good. It’s not a proper ‘comic’ like the Beano though. Other than that maybe some younger aimed manga books would work if it is the picture element she likes.

I would love for Bunty and all the others to come back... sigh.
However there are limited editions of Jinty/Tammy and Misty that are published every so often. They are published by Rebellion publishers I think and tend to be available from comic book shops rather than the newsagents. There has also been a few Tammy and Jinty stories re issued in book form. I see if I can find some pictures...

Ooh, interesting, Ilovemaisie

Stokey · 06/04/2021 08:37

My slightly older girls (9 & 11) like Looshkin and Bunny and Monkey from the Phoenix presents. Not a comic but they also both loved the graphic novel Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson.

JaninaDuszejko · 06/04/2021 10:50

Someone needs to republish the Valda stories from Mandy in comic book form, I'd completely buy those.

DoubleTweenQueen · 06/04/2021 10:57

Both my girls have enjoyed the Beano & particularly the Phoenix. Never occurred to any of us that either were aimed at anyone in particular.

DoubleTweenQueen · 06/04/2021 11:02

And as Stokey mentioned, there are a number of really good comic books available - dd2 has some books in the Hilda series, by Luke Pearson, and also Evil Penguin from the Phoenix Presents

Ilovemaisie · 06/04/2021 12:17

Janina apparently all the stories published in the DC Thomson comics (Bunty, Mandy, Judy) have some complicated copyright issues which is why they haven't been released as books. Angel was one of my favourites. I would love that in book form. I loved Valda too.

Ilovemaisie · 06/04/2021 12:19

I agree that Roller Girl is a really good book. Also the books by Raina Telgemeier are fantastic.

debbrianna · 06/04/2021 12:19

The phoenix is great. Dd 7 loves it. She has annual subscription at the moment as Christmas present.
