Which books of his would you recommend starting with?

First thought was Neverwhere.

taczilla · 22/03/2021 19:54

Mine too.

Veterinari · 22/03/2021 20:06

Agree

Stardust also good

1stWorldProblems · 22/03/2021 20:08

Neverwhere is great. Good Omens (which is him & Terry Pratchett) is fab - funny & clever. I still love the Sandman comics especially The Season of Mists.

Personally I'd avoid 'the Ocean at the End of the Lane' which is almost his most famous book (as opposed to comic) but I think the least like the rest of his writing and is too whimsical for me.

ThatDamnKrampus · 22/03/2021 20:18

I'm listening to audiobooks rather than actual reading atm but I have really enjoyed good omens and currently listening to Samdman.

pollywollydoodler · 23/03/2021 16:16

Thanks all, Neverwhere and Good Omens it is

The one set in the Graveyard - Nobody?

ShakeaHettyFeather · 23/03/2021 16:49

The Graveyard Book is good and now a Y7 set text in some schools.
Good Omens is lovely and funny and the TV series was wonderfully true to it.
Stardust is a wonderful illustrated novel and there's a good film of it.

Some of the short stories are too gruesome for me (rather Poppy Z Brite). However the Sandman graphic novels are amazing and the only comics I've managed to enjoy, even though I needed the Sandman Companion to understand some of it.

Neverwhere
Stardust
Coraline
The Graveyard Book
Good Omens

His Sandman graphic novels are amazing.

DrunkBetch · 25/03/2021 21:57

I was literally having this conversation earlier as to which book to start with as I've never read one but I think I would enjoy them based on the adaptations I've seen.

nevernotstruggling · 25/03/2021 23:13

Never where because it's amazing.

nevernotstruggling · 25/03/2021 23:13

Richard Richard Mayhew dick?

AnneLovesGilbert · 25/03/2021 23:16

Neverwhere, American Gods, Stardust.

I couldn’t stand Ocean, really loathed it sadly.

littlepeas · 26/03/2021 16:44

I found Ocean weirdly quite scary - there was something really claustrophobic about it.

I wouldn’t do American Gods first - it IS amazing - but I think you get more from it if you’ve read something like Neverwhere first, possibly because Neverwhere is set in London and it’s more familiar/feels easier.

pollywollydoodler · 11/05/2021 11:46

Thanks all. I've just finished Neverwhere and loved it. It was an exciting romp with great characters and clever twists of language that made me smile a lot..

American gods was the first book I read by him and I found it to be a fantastic and gripping read
